Ricketts challenges Wigan's Moses, who was a thorn in Bolton's side
Bolton and Wigan's FA Cup fourth round match will go to a replay after they failed to find the target during an exciting match at the Reebok Stadium.
Trotters goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen made several fines saves, denying Jordi Gomez's long-range efforts and Callum McManaman's fine shot late on.
Bolton's Johan Elmander fired over early in the match, while Martin Petrov went close with a low drive.
And in the final 10 minutes, Bolton debutant David Wheater shot just wide.
The Premier League sides, who had played each other in two relatively non-descript league matches earlier in the season, put on a thriller in from of the 14,950 .
The match started with a bang when Kevin Davies flicked the ball on to fellow striker Elmander, whose shot was deflected over the bar by Wigan goalkeeper Mike Pollitt.
The attacks often fluctuated from end-to-end, and Victor Moses, who was a constant threat down the left for Wigan, pounced on a poor Matt Taylor backpass, rounded keeper Jaaskelainen, but fired his effort wide of the target.
Former Crystal Palace man Moses then saw a powerful effort blocked by Wheater, before his Wigan team-mate Gomez tested Jaaskelainen with three fierce shots from outside the area.
Back at the other end, Trotters winger Petrov twice went close, first with an effort which went fractionally wide of the Wigan upright before midfielder Ben Watson was on hand to prevent the Bulgarian's goal-bound effort from flying in.
The second half was a slightly quieter affair but the efforts on goal kept on coming.
Jaaskelainen was called into action again 10 minutes after the restart when he pushed behind Watson's free-kick for a corner.
Sensing Wigan were taking control, Bolton boss Owen Coyle brought on Robbie Blake and Rodrigo Moreno to replace Taylor and Petrov.
Blake looked lively and had a 25-yard effort blocked by key Wigan defender Gary Caldwell. The former Newcastle player then charged down an Elmander volley moments later.
Either side could have grabbed a winner in the last few minutes of the match, first when 19-year-old Wigan striker McManaman forced another athletic stop from flying Finn Jaaskelainen before Wheater smashed a loose ball in the area inches wide of the Wigan goal.
Bolton manager Owen Coyle:
"Following the disappointment of Monday night against Chelsea I was looking for a response from the players and I thought I got exactly that.
"Although we've not won the game we'll look at the positives. We've kept a clean sheet and we've created a lot of opportunities.
"Now we'll look to continue building and progressing for a massive game against Wolves on Wednesday."
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez:
"All over the park there were positive performances and we knew that as a collective we had to be perfect, in defence too against an experienced front-line.
"I'm extremely proud and pleased with the levels of concentration we showed and when you finish an away game with more corners and more opportunities than the home team it shows how complete our display was.
"It was a very pleasing performance in an exciting competition and one I believe the fans will be proud of."
