Southampton   2 - 0   Blackpool

Blackpool's Liam Tomsett and Southampton's Adam Lallana
Adam Lallana (r) has just signed a new Saints contract

League One Southampton dumped Premier League Blackpool out of the FA Cup with second-half goals from Lee Barnard and substitute Guilherme Do Prado.

Blackpool keeper Paul Rachubka saved from Rickie Lambert, who had hit the bar for Saints in the first half, but Barnard was on hand to slot home.

Southampton keeper Bartosz Bialkowski superbly saved from Matt Phillips and Aaron Martin then cleared off the line.

But seven minutes after coming on Do Prado's sublime finish sealed the win.

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway made nine changes from the side beaten by Birmingham in midweek, one more than his Southampton counterpart Nigel Adkins.

Midfielder Adam Lallana, who signed a new contract on Friday, should have put the home side ahead early on when he was played in by Lambert, but for some reason the 22-year-old opted to pass rather than shoot.

That was the first of six first-half chances for the impressive Lallana, who chipped over and then fired a 20-yard effort inches too high.

Blackpool goalkeeper Rachubka, making his first start in a year, had a busy reintroduction to first-team football and he was almost embarrassed when he spilled a Lambert shot before managing to grab the ball.

Rachubka then went to clear the ball only for Barnard to cheekily nod it out of his hand and put it into the net, but referee Danny McDermid ruled the goal out.

The Blackpool keeper had another lucky escape following a goalmouth scramble after Rachubka palmed the ball to the feet of Lambert only for the striker to crash his shot against the crossbar.

Two minutes into the second period, Blackpool finally threatened the Southampton goal when full-back Neil Eardley swung in a cross for former Saints player Jason Euell, who wastefully headed over.

Soon afterwards Saints took the lead when Lallana played in Lambert, whose effort was blocked by Rachubka, only for Barnard to fire his shot past two defenders on the line.

Bialkowski produced a superb save as he tipped away a curling effort from Phillips, while defender Martin also had to clear from underneath the crossbar as another Saints old boy Brett Ormerod attempted to force a loose ball home.

Brazilian Do Prado finally made the game safe for Saints with a stunning shot, cutting inside on his right foot and rifling the ball past Rachubka.

There was even time for another substitute, Liverpool target Alex Chamberlain, to smash a shot against the post.
