Scunthorpe   1 - 5   Everton

Louis Saha celebrates with Sylvain Distin
Everton made a fast start to the tie at Glanford Park

Everton coasted into round four of the FA Cup as they outclassed Championship strugglers Scunthorpe at Glanford Park.

Louis Saha put Everton ahead from 20 yards early on but Chris Dagnall headed wide when well placed to equalise.

Jermaine Beckford saw a shot blocked as Everton took command, and he soon glanced in a header for the second.

A Michael Collins drive gave Scunthorpe hope but Seamus Coleman's header, Marouane Fellaini's shot and a Leighton Baines curler sealed an emphatic win.

The chances of a shock in Lincolnshire were always slim.

In addition to the 32 league places between the teams there was also the fact that Scunthorpe had lost their last six at home, without a win at their ground since late August.

Everton started superbly, with the influential Coleman sending over a dangerous early cross that home keeper Joe Murphy had to push over the bar.

Saha, who scored his first Premier League goal for 11 months on Wednesday, made it two in two games when he found space and drilled into the bottom corner.

After Dagnall spurned his opportunity Everton seemed certain to go further ahead, with Fellaini firing over after a neat exchange of passes with Beckford.

Coleman was causing constant problems and his astute pass put Beckford through, but the former Leeds striker was denied by a good save from Murphy.

Baines then crossed for Leon Osman but his effort from 10 yards was deflected wide, while Eddie Nolan made a superb block to thwart Saha after Fellaini's backheel freed Baines to centre from the left.

But Fellaini again found England full-back Baines and another inviting cross was flicked in by Beckford.

The home side needed something special after the break and barely a minute into the half they hit back when Collins raced on to Josh Wright's ball over the top and lashed into the net from the edge of the area.

There was no fairytale finish, however, as Everton asserted their superiority and ensured their place in Sunday afternoon's draw.

Beckford crossed for Coleman to power in his fifth goal of the season, Fellaini drilled in left-footed from the edge of the area and Baines drifted past some tired defenders before a precise effort found the top corner.
