Crawley celebrate Ben Smith's late goal that earned them a home tie with Derby

Ben Smith's goal deep into extra time sent Swindon out of the FA Cup and secured non-league Crawley a home tie with Derby in the third round.

Smith's volley gave Crawley the lead but Jon-Paul McGovern's far-post header levelled the second-round replay.

Charlie Austin put the hosts in front before Swindon's Jonathan Douglas was sent off for a foul on Glenn Wilson.

An own goal by Michael Rose forced extra time, with Smith hitting the late winner from close range.

His strike was no more than the Blue Square Bet Premier side deserved as they outplayed their hosts.

The visitors took the lead in the 15th minute when midfielder Smith ghosted into the penalty box and and swept home.

Swindon's response was immediate as McGovern met Rose's low cross.

The closing stages of the first half were filled with drama as first Austin lifted the ball over Crawley goalkeeper Michel Kuipers to give the hosts the lead, then Douglas was given his marching orders for lunging at Wilson.

The numerical advantage told in the second period and, after Rose's mistake forced the extra 30 minutes, Crawley dominated.

However, the Reds could not find the breakthrough until Smith's cool finish from 10 yards out sent them through to round three.

Swindon Town boss Danny Wilson told BBC Wiltshire:
"They started very, very well against us - put balls into our box that we haven't dealt with and the first goal is typical of how the game went.

"Going 2-1 up was very fortunate and we didn't deserve it but how many times do you say that and go on and take the result."

"We thought we'd weathered the storm and got through to penalties but that lack of concentration in the last few minutes allowed the boy (Ben Smith) to come inside and pick his spot.
