Reading   2 - 2   West Brom

Kebe's goal for Reading was one of the fastest in FA Cup history
Kebe's goal for Reading was one of the fastest in the long history of the FA Cup

By Harry Reekie

West Brom grabbed a late equaliser against Reading to secure a fifth-round replay in the FA Cup.

Jimmy Kebe latched on to a poor back-pass to give the hosts the lead after just seven seconds, only for Robert Koren to equalise after a fine move.

Shane Long was sent off for a high tackle and the visitors' Youssouf Mulumbu was shown two yellow cards.

Simon Church looked to have won it after bundling home but Joe Mattock levelled from close range late on.

The hosts looked set to add the Baggies to a list of scalps in the competition this season that includes Burnley and Liverpool but must now prepare for a replay at The Hawthorns.

The Royals have not reached the quarter-finals of the competition since 1927 and may feel they have missed a golden chance to do so again.

Top-of-the-table West Brom will be more concerned with securing promotion from the Championship but can now maintain their ambition of bettering their 2008 semi-final defeat to Portsmouth.

Baggies manager Roberto Di Matteo will no doubt be mightily relieved, particularly after the game began in almost the worst possible fashion.

Firstly Andy Slory, who had been named in the side for his first-team debut, injured himself in the warm-up and was replaced by Koren.

And after only seven seconds a dreadful back-pass from Gianni Zuiverloon was anticipated by Mali's Kebe, who rounded Scott Carson and fired home.

The goal was one of fastest in the history of the FA Cup and left the West Brom players visibly stunned, although the Baggies did soon begin to find their stride.

Chris Brunt sent in a teasing free-kick that flicked off the head of Ivar Ingimarsson and fell kindly for Simon Cox, but the midfielder glanced his header past the post.

Kebe should have doubled the advantage for Reading shortly after direct from a free-kick from Brian Howard but someone managed to put his effort into the side-netting.

And the hosts were made to pay almost immediately.

An impressive break from Graham Dorrens put Brunt in space and his cross was converted by Koren from close range.

Thereafter West Brom took a stranglehold on the first half with some slick passing moves but struggled to find a way through in the final third.

Roman Bednar forced Adam Federici into a fine save but the Reading goalkeeper could only stand and watch as Koren hammered a right-footed volley against the post.

Reading's hopes were dealt a huge blow straight after the break when Long was dismissed.

The striker lunged at Abdoulaye Meite with studs showing and was correctly shown a straight red by referee Chris Foy.

But Mulumbu soon ensured both sides would fight out the match with 10 men after being shown a second yellow card for pulling back Brynjar Gunnarsson.

The midfielder, who was only on the pitch for 16 minutes as a substitute, had already been cautioned for a foul on the same player.

Reading took confidence and soon found themselves back in front.

A fine ball from Grzegorz Rasiak sent Church through on goal and although Carson pulled off a fine save to the substitute's first effort, he was unable to stop the second.

The Baggies did not lie down, however, and forged forward to claim a replay in dramatic fashion.

A sweeping move ended with a Cox cross falling for Mattock to convert from the edge of the area, making the replay safe.

Reading manager Brian McDermott:
"We changed the system when they went down to 10 men and we went for the win and when Simon scored I thought we were through.

"But fair play to them, they are a quality side and it was a superb goal at the end to get the equaliser.

"I think West Brom will definitely be in the Premier League next season and they showed their quality.

"The goal so early on was incredible - we worked on that in training!

"But Jimmy has got so much pace that he can do that."

West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo:
"I am sad because we lost three players to injury and suspension and we could do without that.

"Jara had to have five stitches, it was a very bad challenge, and we will have to wait and see about Meite.

"It's not part of the plan to have a replay as we have lots of games coming up but we are happy to be still in the cup.

"I said that we would love to have a cup run this season and we are still in it."
