Kevan dismisses job speculation

Kevan celebrates
Kevan celebrates with his players after the win at the DW Stadium

Notts County caretaker manager Dave Kevan played down his chances of securing the job full-time after a memorable FA Cup win away at Wigan.

A header from Stephen Hunt and an own goal from Gary Caldwell saw County win their fourth-round replay 2-0.

The Magpies now face Premier League Fulham away in the fifth round.

Kevan told BBC Sport: "I'm just trying to get on with things and keep the lads focused. Thankfully I've been able to do that because they're a great bunch."

County, the lowest-ranked side left in the competition, were second best for long periods at the DW but stunned their hosts with two late goals.

Wigan had fought back from 2-0 down to salvage a replay in the original game at Meadow Lane, but were unable to take their chances at home.

It is a major achievement for Kevan, who took temporary charge after Hans Backe's departure on 15 December.

Kevan added: "It's been a very enjoyable evening. Wigan put us under a lot of pressure but we held on and did very well.

"It's a very tough game we've got in prospect (at Fulham). They're a top side, just like Wigan are. But we'll go there and and see what happens.

"We approach every game the same and we make sure we do the right preparations. That's exactly what happened.

"Lee Hughes and Kasper Schmeichel have put on a top performance, just like all the other lads but they won't be fazed by going to Fulham."

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez paid tribute to County after the game.

"This is a day to congratulate Notts County and allow them to enjoy a huge achievement in going through to the fifth round," he said.

"For us, it is to learn a few lessons, knowing that we have been a bit low in terms of confidence in front of goal.

"We just allowed ourselves to get frustrated with the performance."
