Bristol City   1 - 1   Cardiff

Gavin Williams celebrates his late equaliser for Bristol City against Cardiff
Gavin Williams celebrates his equaliser for Bristol City against Cardiff

Gavin Williams scored a tremendous injury-time equaliser to rescue a replay for Bristol City in their FA Cup third-round tie with Cardiff City.

The Welshman arrived at the edge of the area to meet Nicky Maynard's square ball perfectly and blasted a low shot across the diving David Marshall.

Michael Chopra had given Cardiff a 76th-minute lead when his touchline lob caught Dean Gerken out of position.

The replay will be held on Tuesday, 19 January at the Cardiff City Stadium.

With the original date for this game having been postponed because of the freezing weather sweeping the country, there were some nervous glances skywards as fresh snow swirled around Ashton Gate.

But Robins groundstaff had worked hard to ensure the game would go ahead and both sets of players went to work with gusto in the icy night air.

Bristol City had first sight of goal when Louis Carey lost his marker at a corner, only to see his powerful header rebound off the right-hand post.

The home side kept the early pressure on against their Championship rivals and Bluebirds defender Mark Hudson did well to get his body in front of Dave Clarkson's shot.

The settling snow made the conditions under foot difficult for the players, but did not prevent the two sides from creating some pleasing passing moves.

After Bristol had made the early running, the visitors started to find their rhythm and by slow degrees started to turn the tide.

Cardiff defender Anthony Gerrard did a passable impression of his cousin, England and Liverpool midfielder Steven, with a 16th-minute free-kick that had Gerken scrambling across his goal.

An opportunistic lob, just after the half-hour mark, from Aaron Wildig just drifted over the bar after Chopra had put good pressure on goalkeeper Gerken's clearance kick.

There was a brief discussion between the match officials and the two managers, Bristol City's Gary Johnson and Cardiff's Dave Jones, as the two sides left the field for half-time.

This was to reassess the freezing conditions but thankfully Ashton Gate was standing up well to the elements and the game restarted on time.

A long-range effort from Robins midfielder Paul Hartley flew over the crossbar, while half-time substitute Alvaro Saborio - on for Clarkson - headed wide from inside the area.

Then on 76 minutes Chopra produced a moment of skill and opportunism to break the deadlock.

Warren Feeney chased what seemed to be a lost cause down the right but did enough to cause Robins keeper Gerken to botch his kick.

The ball fell to Chopra tight on the touchline and the striker curled a sublime first-time chip over the despairing Gerken into the Bristol net - his first goal since 29 September.

The Cardiff striker collided with Robins boss Johnson as he arced down the touchline in celebration and reacted to the contact, but any silliness between the two men was short-lived.

The Robins searched desperately for an equaliser but could not create any clear-cut chances as the clock ran down.

Then two minutes into injury time Maynard collected the ball on the Cardiff 'D', held off his marker and laid the ball perfectly into the path of substitute Williams arriving on the right.

The Wales midfielder barely had to break stride and clattered a pin-point shot into the far corner to deny the club he supported as a youngster.

Although missing out on the win tonight, Cardiff will at least have home-field advantage in a week's time for the replay that will decide who advances to meet Leicester in the fourth round.

Bristol City manager Gary Johnson:

"I couldn't stand to see us concede another injury-time goal... it's a nice feeling for us to score when it matters most.

"Gavin is a Cardiff fan so it was a special moment for him. It was one of those substitutions that worked, although I wasn't that pleased with him up until his goal.

"I'm sure the replay will be equally competitive, but Cardiff don't have the best of home records at the moment."

Cardiff City manager Dave Jones:
"We'd worked so hard to get our noses in front and I thought we'd played some really good football.

"Just at the death, if we'd taken a little more care in protecting the ball, just maybe one or two tired.

"The players from both camps did themselves proud because the conditions were very, very difficult under foot."
