Crystal Palace substitute Calvin Andrew heaped more misery on managerless Sheffield Wednesday by firing a second-half FA Cup winner at Hillsborough.
Palace, whose players have not yet been paid their December wages, took a 19th-minute lead when Neil Danns swept the ball home from six yards.
A crowd of just 8,690 saw Wednesday level through Clint Hills' own goal after Leon Clarke's shot was blocked.
But Andrew took advantage of hesitant defending to fire a left-footed winner.
The result leaves the Owls without a win in 12 games in all competitions, their last success having come against Coventry in October.
There was little sign of that run ending against Palace, who fully deserved their lead.
Danns volleyed wide soon after, while Wednesday mustered only one chance in the opening half-hour.
Francis Jeffers, back in the starting line-up for the first time since being sent off in a Carling Cup defeat at Port Vale at the end of August, saw his angled drive blocked by Palace defender Jose Fonte.
However, Wednesday were level at half-time when Jeffers and Clarke had shots blocked before Palace defender Hill turned the ball beyond his own keeper from six yards.
Palace suffered a blow when Sean Scannell limped off after 58 minutes - but it was his replacement Andrew who scored the winner 10 minutes after coming on.
Owls defender Frank Simek failed to clear a long ball and Andrew nipped in to steal the ball and fire a low left-footed shot into the bottom corner.
Jeffers, Tudgay, Jermaine Johnson and substitute Etienne Esajas all had shots blocked or saved in the closing stages, but Wednesday caretaker manager Sean McAuley is still chasing his first win after three matches in charge.
Sheffield Wednesday caretaker manager Sean McAuley told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"I thought we were poor and didn't deserve to win. Obviously there is a lot of regret because we know it's a knockout competition.
"In patches we played OK, but the underlying factor is the desire and belief and work ethic that is needed, isn't there.
"The staff are putting in a tremendous amount of work with this group."
Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock told BBC London 94.9:
"Calvin Andrew got a standing ovation from the lads in the dressing room.
"He deserved that goal. He's been out for six and seven months with injury, and he's worked his socks off trying to get back.
"It wasn't a great game, but you're not going to get great games in those conditions. We really worked hard for each other, took the chances when they came and when we had to defend, we did."
