Bolton   4 - 0   Lincoln City

Bolton celebrate taking the lead against Lincoln
Bolton bounced back impressively from ex-boss Gary Megson's sacking

Managerless Bolton produced a dominant performance to outclass League Two strugglers Lincoln and book their place in round four of the FA Cup.

Moses Swaibu deflected a Matt Taylor pass into his own net as Bolton, led by caretaker boss Chris Evans, went ahead.

An unmarked Chung-Yong Lee doubled the lead a minute later with a clinical finish at the back post.

Gary Cahill headed in Kevin Davies' cross for the third and Mark Davies added a fourth from close range.

Evans, assisted by head coach Steve Wigley, says he does not want to succeed the sacked Gary Megson on a permanent basis but he will be pleased with the way his team overcame their lowly League Two opponents.

Bolton should have taken the lead after 13 minutes when the ball broke to Lee on the edge of the area.

He took a touch but failed to test goalkeeper Rob Burch, hitting his shot high over the bar.

Cahill then strode forward, only to see his effort from inside the area cleared to safety.

Bolton stepped up the pace and Ivan Klasnic curled his shot just wide before testing Burch from an acute angle and hooking a shot wide after being set up by Taylor.

Taylor got away from his marker to meet Gretar Steinsson's cross but failed to find the target from inside the six-yard area.

The visitors launched a swift counter-attack and Chris Herd saw a stinging shot gathered by Ali Al Habsi at the second attempt.

But Bolton pressed on and rocked Lincoln with two goals in quick succession - Swaibu diverting the ball past Burch and Lee scoring with a fine strike.

An effort from Taylor came back off the underside of the bar and substitute Johan Elmander sent a close-range shot over before Cahill nodded his sixth goal of the season.

Lincoln refused to die down and Herd tested Al Habsi with the goalkeeper doing well to turn his effort around the post.

But substitute Davies made it four for Bolton in stoppage time after being set up by Paul Robinson.

Bolton caretaker manager Chris Evans:
"Given the circumstances of the last few days, it was very important the players were focused. It is very difficult when the attention of the football world and the media are on you.

"I believe there is a real chance of ongoing success. The manager who comes in will have reason to feel positive about the future as we have solid foundations.

"We did a professional job and are pleased to be in the hat.

"We had to pick a side that was going to get a result. People say the FA Cup has lost its magic but, as a traditional football man, I love it. I feel we have a duty of care to the competition."

Lincoln manager Chris Sutton:

"The effort and commitment of the players was fantastic.

"We played some decent stuff and did not feel they were much of a threat early on. But then we conceded an own goal and were all at sea for the second.

"We knew it was going to be very difficult after that but we did not disgrace ourselves in any way.

"This is mainly a young side and, despite the scoreline, the players can be proud of their efforts."
