League Two Peterborough produced a dominant display to dump Championship Colchester out of the FA Cup.
Boyd was among the goals as Peterborough eased to victory
Aaron Mclean headed the opener in the fourth minute and hit the post, while Mark Yates went close for the U's.
Teddy Sheringham equalised from the spot after Chris Whelpdale fouled Kevin Lisbie two minutes after the break.
Posh regained their lead within a minute when George Boyd volleyed in a cross from Charlie Lee, who headed in another Hughes corner to seal victory.
It was the second season running that Colchester have gone out to League Two opposition and they can have few complaints about the scoreline after being outplayed.
The tone was set when Hughes whipped in a good ball from the left which Mclean converted by stooping low to collect his 20th goal of the season from six yards.
Mark Tyler saved well with his legs from Yeates before Mclean was denied by Dean Gerken and headed Whelpdale's centre against the post.
Whelpdale turned villain when he nudged Lisbie in the back and Sheringham tucked away the spot-kick.
The veteran striker could have levelled after Boyd's strike but poked wide from Yeates's cross, while Karl Duguid was also off-target in similar circumstances.
Lee made them pay for those misses to seal Peterborough's place in round four.
