Nicky Forster hit two second-half goals as Brighton avoided an FA Cup upset at Blue Square Premier outfit Torquay.
In a match played in difficult conditions, Tim Sills came close to giving Torquay the lead with a header moments before Forster's first goal.
Forster's 63rd-minute header came from a long cross by Bas Savage which Dean Cox turned back into the area.
In injury-time, Forster put the match beyond doubt when he ran on to a fine pass from Cox and coolly converted.
