Wigan have excelled in the domestic cups this season

Wigan edged into the FA Cup fourth round after winning 4-2 on penalties.

David Healy, who had scored a penalty in normal time, missed for Leeds, as did Rob Hulse with their fourth kick.

In normal time Andreas Johansson gave Wigan the lead, before David Healy volleyed in, only for Jason Roberts' shot to make it 2-1 on 50 minutes.

Healy converted a penalty to level the tie for a second time, before Roberts then powered in a header, but Gary Kelly's dipping shot to make it 3-3.

There might have been more than the six goals, but Gary Teale's first-half swerving shot hit the bar, while a similar effort for Leeds from Eddie Lewis also struck the woodwork.

On 76 minutes Liam Miller hit the bar for a second time for Leeds with a superbly executed shot.

Healy was heavily involved in the game's first chance when a Miller run opened up the Wigan defence.

Miller's pass was cleverly dummied by Hulse, allowing the ball to run through to Healy, but from an acute angle the Northern Ireland striker hit the side netting.

Healy's next contribution was rather less effective as the Northern Ireland striker lazily conceded possession.

Teale pounced on Healy's mistake and surged forward, before hitting a swerving shot that skimmed the crossbar.

Midway through the first half the ball came back off the Leeds crossbar for a second time, but this time Wigan converted the rebound.

Johansson was set free by Roberts' pass and although the Swede's first effort hit the post, he reacted quickly to prod the ball past Neil Sullivan.

Completely against the run of play Leeds drew level from a corner five minutes before the interval.

Leighton Baines managed to clear Hulse's header off the line, but the Wigan defender could no do nothing to prevent Healy hooking the ball home.

Wigan regained the lead on 50 minutes when Roberts took advantage of some hesitant Leeds defending, swivelling before directing a short into the corner of the net.

Leeds responded in bullish fashion and Lewis hit the bar with a left-footed shot.

Just past the hour Leeds won a penalty when Hulse put the Wigan defence under pressure for a second time following a corner.

Jackson raised his hand as he jumped for the ball with Hulse and referee Graham Poll immediately gave the penalty.

Healy made no mistake with his spot-kick.

Wigan, who were only able to name four substitutes due to injury, suspension and players away on African Cup of Nations duty, could have been forgiven for approaching extra-time with trepidation.

But Roberts looked to have won the game for Paul Jewell's side in the 103rd minute when he got on the end of a Graham Kavanagh cross to thump a header past Sullivan.

With five minutes remaining Leeds equalised for a third time with the best goal of the match.

Veteran Kelly controlled the ball on his chest before hitting an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net to send the tie to penalties.

Wigan's reward for negotiating their way past Leeds is a fourth-round tie away at Manchester City.
