Macclesfield 2-0 Vauxhall Motors
It was the end of the road for Vauxhall Motors
Two goals in the closing stages ended Vauxhall Motors' FA Cup journey at Moss Rose. Kyle Lightbourne broke the deadlock nine minutes from time and Matthew Tipton added a second in injury time as the part-timers crashed out. Macclesfield's opener came just minutes after Vauxhall Motors had gone desperately close to scoring. The FA Cup giantkillers found themselves in the driving seat in the latter stages and for a time it looked like they would seal their place in the hat for the third round. The UniBond League side, who knocked out Second Division QPR in the previous round, were aided by a heroic display by goalkeeper Andy Ralph. Their efforts could easily have seen them send a second Football League club skidding out, with Terry Fearns seeing his shot cleared off the line by Steve Macauley with 15 minutes remaining. Ralph was called into action as early as the fifth minute to thwart Danny Whitaker and Macauley put a header over the crossbar as the home side got off to a flying start. Vauxhall Motors gradually got into the game and Peter Cumiskey forced goalkeeper Steve Wilson into his first save when he unleashed an ambitious shot from 30 yards. Extra gear Nicky Young drove in a shot from long range that Wilson did well to stop and Matt Haddrell headed Wayne McDermott's cross wide. Lightbourne so nearly gave Macclesfield the lead on the hour, lifting his shot over the onrushing Ralph - but it narrowly cleared the crossbar. Five minutes later Ralph pulled off a fine finger-tip save from Macauley to keep his side level. But Macclesfield found an extra gear as Vauxhall Motors ran out of gas and late strikes from Lightbourne and Tipton sealed the exit - but they can be proud of their fantastic achievements.
