Hartlepool 1-2 Southend

Southend scored two goals in a minute as they came from behind to beat Hartlepool and secure a second-round tie against Bournemouth.

The home side appeared to be in the driving seat after taking the lead midway through the second half, but Southend made them pay for failing to take their chances.

Southend had the better of the first-half chances, Tony Scully hit the crossbar with a fierce 25-yard shot in the 18th minute and shortly afterwards Barrington Belgrave had a shot cleared off the line.

At the other end, Southend goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan pushed away an early header from Mark Tinkler and saved well at the feet of top scorer Eifion Williams.

Hartlepool improved at the start of the second-half and Marcus Richardson's goal after 63 minutes gave them a deserved lead.

But with three minutes left, Tes Bramble hammered Southend level with a spectacular 30-yard shot into the bottom corner of the net.

And a minute later Leon Cort headed the winner from a corner as the ball squeezed under goalkeeper Anthony Williams.

Southend: Flahavan, Beard, Cort, McSweeney, Searle, Scully, Smith, Maher, Jenkins, Bramble, Belgrave. Subs: Gay, Broad, Thurgood, Clark, Jones.
