Grimsby hung on grimly for a replay after being outplayed by lowly York at Blundell Park.

The Minstermen made the gap of two divisions between the teams look very narrow as they bombarded the home goal.

Grimsby have seen us play and will be more aware of us, but our chance has not gone... he next game will be our best chance
York boss
Terry Dolan

Only the brilliance of Grimsby goalkeeper Danny Coyne, who made great saves from Michael Proctor and Lee Bullock, denied Terry Dolan's side a deserved passage into round four.

York dominated from the start and had a golden chance to go ahead in just the fifth minute.

Lee Nogan galloped onto a through ball from Chris Bass and as Coyne came out he fired a right-foot volley just wide of the far post.

Seven minutes later Grimsby should have taken the lead with their only clear chance of the match.

Neat work by Ben Chapman and Menno Willems down the left created the chance for Phil Jevons but from six yards he side-footed a volley over the crossbar.

From then on, York took over and created a succession of good opportunities.

In the 20th minute Proctor met a Graham Potter corner at the near post and saw his header pushed out by Coyne.

It's disappointing that we were not able to break them down and create better chances... we had enough of the ball to be able to do that
Grimsby boss
Paul Groves

Near the interval he dispossessed Grimsby player-manager Paul Groves but saw his shot blocked by the legs of Coyne with the striker hitting the rebound wide.

All Grimsby could muster in reply was a weak Chris Thompson header from a Danny Butterfield cross.

It was a similar story after the break with Coyne again standing between York and victory.

In a dangerous City break he was left one-on-one with Richardson but saved at the second attempt.

Centre-back Mike Basham could have won it for York when he met a Potter corner at the far post but his header went just wide.
