Chesterfield 1-1 Southend

Second Division Chesterfield sneaked into the FA Cup third-round draw thanks to a last-gasp equaliser against Southend at Saltergate.

Time looked to have run out for the Spireites until leading scorer Luke Beckett blasted home an 89th-minute leveller.

The goal, Beckett's eighth of the season, was just what Chesterfield deserved after a rousing performance against their Division Three opponents.

Beckett, put on the transfer list as Chesterfield seek to raise some much-needed cash, had a first-half effort disallowed for offside and then smashed a header against the crossbar.

Beckett was unlucky again when his 32nd-minute header beat goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan only for Southend player-manager Rob Newman to clear off the line.

Southend somehow held out and then went in front 15 minutes from time as Stuart Thurgood put Tes Bramble in the clear and the striker finished with a stunning first-time shot.

Chesterfield: Abbey, Booty, Breckin, Edwards, Willis, Parrish, Richardson, D'Auria, Howard, Beckett, Reeves. Subs: Richmond, Williams, Nathan Smith, Warne, Rushbury.

Southend: Flahavan, Broad, Newman, Cort, Searle, Thurgood, Maher, Hutchings, Forbes, Bramble, Rawle. Subs: Gay, McSweeney, Beard, Johnson, Belgrave.

Referee: T Parkes (Birmingham).
