Former league outfit Newport, 17th in the Doc Martens Premier League, pushed Second Division Blackpool hard before falling away in extra time in the driving rain at Spytty Park.

The Exiles - formed after the old club went bust in 1989 - took the lead when Matt Rose produced a glancing header after 24 minutes.

Gary Shepherd missed a great chance to double the lead when he headed wide.

Blackpool's strength told and when Richard Wellens slipped the ball through Brett Ormerod chipped it over the diving goalkeeper to claim his 19th of the season.

In the first minute of extra time John Murphy dived to head home but the Welsh club were still in it until a shot going well wide was diverted into his own net by Steve Benton.

Southampton target Ormerod joined Shaun Goater as the country's top goal getter with his second of the game which sealed a flattering 4-1 success and earned a home tie with Rochdale.

Newport County: Mountain, Robison, Clark, Eckhardt, Benton, Davies, Perry, Ryan, Matt Rose, James, Shephard. Subs: Thomas, Walker, Cowe, Souter, Paul.

Blackpool: Barnes, Coid, Hughes, Reid, Hills, Bullock, Wellens, O'Kane, Simpson, John Murphy, Ormerod. Subs: Parkinson, Pullen, Thompson, Jamie Milligan, MacKenzie.

Referee: M Jones (Chester).
