The Terminator is back
Julian Dicks pointed an accusing finger at Wigan
E-mail your reaction to Football Talk Wigan were accused of one of football's cardinal sins after becoming the biggest FA Cup first-round victims. After crashing out to Canvey Island, Wigan stood guilty of the charge of taking lightly a team containing Julian Dicks.
The man who rejoiced in the nickname of The Terminator during his West Ham days led the Ryman Premier League side to a famous victory. Dicks was playing only his third game since coming out of a three-year retirement. And after a raw battle which saw Wigan reduced to nine men, Dicks said: "I think they thought it was going to be a jolly-up. "They thought they would romp us but that was a big mistake. "It was really enjoyable," said Dicks, although that sentiment was only felt one way. Wigan manager Paul Jewell blasted his side's lack of discipline after Tony Dinning and Paul Ashcroft were sent off. Dinning was dismissed for an off-the-ball kick at Neil Gregory, while Ashcroft followed eight minutes from time after a clash with Mickey Bennett earned him a second yellow card.
Jewell blasted: "You can't be ill-disciplined like that and expect to get anything out of the game. Dicks, sent off nine times in his professional career, was first to extend sympathy to the dismissed Wigan pair. "I thought they were unlucky because I didn't think either of them were sending-off offences," said Dicks who had his own running battle with Paul Dalglish. A crude challenge on the Wigan player brought Dicks a lecture from referee Mark Warren. Dicks then escaped when he pushed Dalglish in the face.
The feud continued as Dalglish went into an aerial challenge leading with his arm, with referee Warren warning both players to calm down. FA Trophy holders Canvey underlined their pedigree as giantkillers, having knocked Port Vale out of the FA Cup at the same stage last season. Credit goes to manager Jeff King, who went for the jugular following Ashcroft's dismissal. His reward was an 88th minute winner from former Ipswich and Colchester player Neil Gregory. King said afterwards: "We'd like the worst team left in the competition in the second round, followed by Manchester United in the third. "That would do us nicely." |
