Substitute Neil McKenzie spared Blackpool's blushes against non-league Newport as he fired home a penalty late in the game to earn the Second Division side a draw.

Blackpool have fallen against similar opposition in recent seasons - Yeovil dumped them out of the competition last year - and for long periods the Seasiders looked being on the wrong end of another embarrassing giant-killing act.

After a lively start, Newport went ahead in the 18th minute when Gary Shephard fired in a shot which James Pullen could only block and in the melee which followed, defender Ian Hughes pushed the ball over his own line.

But Blackpool equalised in the 35th minute when Tommy Jaszczun forced the ball home from Paul Simpson's curling corner.

A blunder from goalkeeper Pullen was to blame for Newport's second goal three minutes later when the shot-stopper failed to hold onto a cross into the box and Billy Clark scored from five yards.

But in the 76th minute McKenzie was the hero for the league club, firing home from the spot after Jason Perry had up-ended Martin Bullock as he raced in on goal.

The home side piled on the pressure, but Newport held on to secure a replay in front of their own fans.

Blackpool: Pullen, Coid, Hughes, Jaszczun, Hills, Bullock, Jamie Milligan, O'Kane, Simpson, Ormerod, John Murphy.

Newport County: Mountain, Robison, Clark, Eckhardt, Benton, James, Davies, Perry, Matt Rose, Ryan, Shephard.
