Cup Shock of the Week
![]()
Roy Essandoh's dramatic winner capped an eventful match at Filbert Street - we've chosen one of the big cup shocks of recent years for our Goal of the Week.
It was not just the goal - or the way it was scored - that made Essandoh's header the most notable strike of a dramatic FA Cup weekend. The chain of events produced a classic few minutes in this competition's long and eventful history. Few who saw Wycombe boss Lawrie Sanchez's animated reaction from inside a room beneath the Filbert Street stand will ever forget it. The man who scored the winner in the 1988 final had been sent from the field - and you did not have to be an expert lip-reader to know why. Sanchez had seen a penalty appeal turned down for an apparent handball. Outraged that his side's chance of a winner apeared to have gone, the Wycombe boss charged down the touchline to make his views all too clear for anyone prudish about bad language. Referee Steve Bennett was not impressed and sent Sanchez to his hiding place under the stand. And then late on, it happened. Arnar Gunlaugsson, who scored a freak winner earlier in the cup run at Aston Villa, committed a foul that Bennett did spot.
Although the free kick was cleared, it went back into the box and was headed across goal for Essandoh to leap above international defender Gerry Taggart. Leicester keeper Simon Royce had no chance, and Essandoh began the celebrations with a bizarre scissor dance along the touchline in front of the Wycombe fans. The scorer was mobbed. Meanwhile, unseen by the main TV cameras, Bennett attempted to be the party pooper and sent off Steve Brown for his shirtless celebration. Brown was relatively unbothered, certainly compared with the Leicester fans whose dreams of cup glory go unfulfilled for another season. But those who believe the FA Cup really is something worth protecting had seen something very welcome indeed.
