Wanderers fightback stuns Dons
![]() Rammell is sent crashing by Ainsworth's challenge
Wycombe 2-2 Wimbledon
Two second-half goals in eight minutes ensured that plucky Wycombe Wanderers have another bite at the FA Cup cherry after holding Wimbledon. Late strikes from Michael Simpson and Steve Brown cancelled out first-half goals from Mark Williams and young striker Patrick Agyemang. Dons' manager Terry Burton was left to rue the chances missed by his side to put the game out of the Second Division side's reach. And despite a frenetic last five minutes, when Wimbledon peppered the Wycombe goal, the Adams Park side held on to fight another day.
Wimbledon were intent on not becoming the victims of a giant-killing act by sprinting out of their stalls. The Wycombe defence, in particular 'keeper Martin Taylor, were tested to the limit with defender Jason Cousins saving off the line from Gareth Ainsworth and then Agyemang's effort was safely dealt with by Taylor.
The Wanderers, with a passionate home support behind them, began to find their feet after the 20-minute mark.
Pacy winger Martin Lee gave Ainsworth a torrid time down the left while 34-year-old Brown, who received an early booking, headed fractionally over from Lee's cross. The tenacious Brown, guilty of fouling Neal Ardley on two occasions, was on the end of a nasty tackle himself which resulted in the yellow card being shown to Trond Andersen. The cup tie came to life for all the wrong reasons when both Wycombe's Paul McCarthy and Darren Holloway were booked for respective horrendous tackles and a subsequent punch-up.
The Dons finally managed to break Wycombe's resolve when Williams powered his header past Taylor from Ardley's right-sided corner.
Kelvin Davis entered the "save of the season" competition with a superb diving save from a viciously struck volley from Keith Ryan. Lawrie Sanchez's men were made to rue that miss when moments later 20-year-old Agyemang twisted in the penalty area to score from Jason Euell's through-ball.
Just when it seemed that the Dons had sewn up the cup tie, up popped Michael Simpson to place his effort, off the foot of unfortunate Peter Hawkins, into the net. And then the unthinkable happened. Brown's indirect free-kick inside the area was cleared only to be immediately sent back into the 18-yard box. The ball found its way back to Brown and he sent the Adams Park faithful into raptures.
