Di Canio: Barthez did not fool me

West Ham goal hero Paolo di Canio says that Fabien Barthez's attempts to psyche him out at Old Trafford did not work for a moment.

The Manchester United goalkeeper tried to put di Canio off when he was clear on goal during Sunday's FA Cup fourth-round tie.

Barthez thought the Italian striker was offside and stood still with one arm in the air.

But di Canio ignored both him and the partisan Old Trafford crowd to score a goal that sealed an unlikely 1-0 win for the Hammers.

"He tried to stop me. He tried to make my brain a little bit confused," di Canio said.

"But I have played 15 years at the top level and have a little bit of experience in these situations.

"It is better to score and then see whether the goalkeeper is right or wrong.

"I am very happy because we have not won at Old Trafford for 15 years.

"We had 10,000 fans supporting us and we have given them a dream day."

Cole praised

Di Canio also denied rumours that he wants to leave Upton Park to return to Italy.

"I want to stay in England," he said. "I like the football, I like the atmosphere and I like the culture in England. Why would I want to leave?"

He believes West Ham are destined for success and is particularly impressed by the progress of English trio Joe Cole, Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick.

"Joe Cole is one of the most talented players in England, he enthused. "We have so much ability in midfield and attack."
