Bolton put five past Scunthorpe
![]() Holdsworth was in clinical form
Bolton 5-1 Scunthorpe
Dean Holdsworth scored a hat-trick as Bolton thrashed a plucky Scunthorpe side in an entertaining FA Cup tie at the Reebok Stadium. Brian Laws' Division Three side produced a battling display, but were ultimately outclassed by Sam Allardyce's Division One promotion hopefuls. The combination of Summerbee's excellent crossing and Holdsworth's clinical finishing set Bolton on their way to victory. And two second half goals from Kevin Nolan emphasised the gulf in quality between the sides.
It became evident early on in the match that Bolton could exploit Scunthorpe's defensive weakness in the air. They fired an early warning when Bo Hansen blazed a volley over the bar after indecisive play from Scunthorpe presented him with a good chance to open the scoring. Summerbee, who was given his chance with Ricardo Gardner on international duty with Jamaica, was supplying plenty of crosses as Bolton endeavoured to take advantage of their aerial superiority.
And when Summerbee supplied another pinpoint centre, Dean Holdsworth rose above the Scunthorpe defence to power a header into the top left hand corner. And just two minutes later Bolton produced an almost identical strike. Holdsworth headed his second goal from a Summerbee corner with the visitors again unable to cope with a ball delivered into the box. But within seconds, Scunthorpe reduced the deficit as Garcia gratefully tapped in from close range after Guy Ipoua's mis-hit shot fortuitously fell at his feet. Just after the restart Holdsworth completed his hat-trick as he nodded in another cross, this time from Anthony Barness. Nolan brace It seemed that Bolton would score at will while Scunthorpe continued to allow Bolton to pepper their penalty area with crosses, with a disorganised defence proving their downfall. Holdsworth was replaced shortly after his third goal and Scunthrope might have sighed with relief but it was short-lived as Kevin Nolan slotted home almost immediately and Bolton were threatening a rout. But despite the scoreline, Scunthorpe were not quite ready to accept their fate and came close to scoring again themselves, with Bolton clearing one shot off the line. The visitors pushed forward in search of a goal to give the score some respectability. But the space that was left invited some swift counter-attacking from Bolton and it was no surprise when Kevin Nolan scored his second. A neat spin, turn and a low drive into the corner after a clever backheel by Greth Farrelly completed a five star performance, and there will be quite a few clubs hoping to avoid Bolton in the next round.
