Serie A side Roma have appointed 36-year-old Vincenzo Montella as coach until the end of the season 24 hours after Claudio Ranieri resigned.

Montella, who was already employed by the club as youth-team coach, will begin his tenure with an away fixture at Bologna on Wednesday night.

Ranieri's resignation followed a fourth consecutive loss that left the team lying eighth in the table.

Roma are nine points off the final Champions League qualification place.

Montella scored 118 goals in 267 appearances for the club during a 10-year spell from 1999 and also made 14 appearances for Fulham during a loan spell in 2007, scoring five times.

However his promotion at the Stadio Olimpico has handed him a first major managerial position, his only previous experience coming as coach of Roma's under-15 team.

Ranieri's resignation followed a poor run of form in which they conceded 14 goals in their last four games, including a 3-2 home loss to Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.

The nadir came on Sunday as Roma squandered a 3-0 lead in going down 4-3 to Genoa, the subsequent fan protests easing Ranieri's decision to step down.
