Serie A players call off threatened strike action

Italian fans will not be deprived of top flight action

Players in Italian football's top division have called off a strike planned for this weekend.

The Italian Players' Association (AIC) has reached an agreement with Serie A officials over a new collective deal.

It will not be signed until next week, but a AIC statement on Thursday said "positive progress" had been made and that the "protest action is withdrawn".

Among other things, the collective contract protects the rights of players to reject an unwanted transfer.

"Finally, we have tackled the issues and we are in agreement," said Italy's football league chief Maurizio Beretta.
