Madrid lose Redondo to Milan

Redondo in action in the World Club Championships
AC Milan have signed Argentine midfielder Fernando Redondo from European champions Real Madrid on a three-year deal, the Spanish club confirmed on Thursday.

His agent Ernesto Bronchetti later said the 31-year-old cost the Serie A giants $17m, and the player will earn $5m a year.

A club spokesman, confirming the fee, said: "We have decided not to obstruct his move."

The transfer comes hours after more than a hundred Madrid fans, calling themselves the "Redondo fan club", rallied outside the Bernabeu stadium to protest Redondo's rumored switch.

The crowd held placards insulting newly-elected Madrid President Florentino Perez. Other banners simply said "Redondo is not for sale".

The cultured playmaker was a star of Real Madrid's march to the Champions League crown last season, but rarely reproduced the same sparkling form in the Spanish league.
