Chelsea strikers Nicholas Anelka and Didier Drogba
Anelka celebrates the winning goal in Portugal that ensures Chelsea top Group D

By Sam Lyon

Nicolas Anelka grabbed the only goal of the game in Portugal to ensure Chelsea will qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League as group winners.

The Frenchman stooped to head home Florent Malouda's pinpoint cross to settle the game in the second half.

It was a clinical if uninspiring win for the in-form Londoners, who rarely looked like getting out of first gear.

Fernando Belluschi twice tried his luck from range for Porto, hitting the bar once, but Chelsea's defence held firm.

And with one game for the Blues remaining in the group stages - at home to Apoel Nicosia on 8 December - Atletico Madrid remain the only club to have scored against them in this year's competition.

They may face sterner tests than Porto if they are to go all the way, though, following a match that at times resembled a training ground exercise.

With both teams having already qualified for the knockout stages and large areas of seats at the Estadio do Dragao left empty, the atmosphere was somewhat muted throughout.

And while a raft of changes only helped Chelsea's movement and incisiveness in their impressive 4-0 defeat of Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday, the same could not be said of their performance in Portugal.

With the likes of Didier Drogba, Michael Ballack and Ricardo Carvalho recalled to the side, the Blues certainly looked capable of producing a result on paper.

They started well enough, Anelka seeing a smart effort from range beaten away by keeper Beto and Ballack having a goalbound shot deflected wide.

But that was as good as it got for the visitors in a lethargic first half, while Porto showed little sign of resting on their laurels.

Belluschi was at the heart of all their good work, and he gave warning of his ability to shoot from range when he forced Cech into a save on the stretch on 21 minutes, the Czech keeper also keeping out Silvestre Varela's follow-up.

And he went even closer to an opener soon after, crashing a glorious effort from 25 yards onto the crossbar with Cech beaten.

It meant Chelsea were by far the happier side when the half-time whistle blew but manager Carlo Ancelotti, who had insisted before the game he wanted his side to win the game and the group, sent his troops out in the second half with renewed vigour.

Anelka and Malouda, certainly, were livelier, and both were involved in a neat move that ended with Deco rifling wide from 18 yards out.

And the pair combined again for the winner, Malouda collecting Yuri Zhrikov's pass and crossing for Anelka to head home unmarked from four yards out.

Porto responded with a couple of half chances, substitute Givaldinho Hulk and Ernesto Farias both bringing Cech into action with tame efforts.

But in truth the hosts rarely looked like breaching a Chelsea defence that has been so impressive this season.

As it was, Ancelotti's outfit comfortably saw out the match to make it four wins and a draw in Europe this season, with three of those victories coming courtesy of a single Anelka goal.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti:
"To win the group was the most important thing and we have reached our objective. To win here is not easy, but we got a good result and we're happy.

"In the first half we were not so good, but after the break we played a lot better and showed our personality.

"The Champions League is our aim this season, yes, and now we can look to do things in the Premier League, starting with Arsenal on Sunday."
