Wrong-footed Petrescu delighted

Dan Petrescu was surprised that his Rangers counterpart had not picked a more attacking line-up for the game his Unirea Urziceni side won 4-1 at Ibrox.

"I know that they have played with just one striker before," said the coach. "I thought they would play with two as they needed to win.

"Their coach did well to surprise me and I had to change my team."

Despite the win, Petrescu was still looking to clinch third spot before thinking of qualifying from Group G.

The Romanian champions are now second behind runaway leaders Sevilla in the race to reach the Champions League knock-out stage, but a Europa League spot was still the former Chelsea defender's priority.

I had to take action immediately after their goal as we could not afford to lose

"If we are not losing the next game against Rangers then we have a big chance to get third," said the coach. "Then we can think about second place."

Many Rangers fans left the stadium long before the final whistle in disgust as Walter Smith's side remained rooted to the foot of the table.

"I don't think it was easy for us," said Petrescu after a game when his own side lost the opener to an own goal and then benefitted from two at the other end. "Maybe the score looks like that.

"I had to take action immediately after their goal as we could not afford to lose.

"We got the luck and they missed a penalty before we scored our second with a deflection.

"My players did very well in the second half after we scored the second goal, but we did not play well in the first half.

"I expected them to put more pressure on us after the second goal."
