Rapid revive red strip for Celtic

Celtic beat Rapid Vienna 3-0 in Glasgow
Celtic won a bad-tempered return leg in 1984 but had to play again

Rapid Vienna insist their decision to play in red in next week's Europa League clash with Celtic is not designed to provoke their opponents.

The Austrians will wear the colour to commemorate the notorious 1984 European Cup-Winners' Cup tie between the sides.

Celtic won the tie on aggregate but a play-off was ordered when a Rapid player feigned injury from a bottle thrown from the terracing in Glasgow.

The third match took place at Old Trafford and Rapid won 1-0.

Having lost 3-1 in Vienna, Celtic hit back to win a stormy home tie thanks to goals from Brian McClair, Murdo MacLeod and Tommy Burns.

The game turned ugly when the Austrians threatened to walk off the park, believing an infringement had led to Celtic's final goal, and skipper Reinhard Kienast was sent off.

Rapid defender Rudolf Weinhofer later pretended he had been struck by the thrown bottle and a replay was ordered after two appeals from the Austrian side, who also said their goalkeeper was hit by a missile from the crowd.

The decisive goal in Manchester was scored by Rapid's current manager Peter Pacult, who was later attacked by a fan on the pitch.

The Austrians went on to reach the final of the tournament, where they lost out to Everton.

Rapid spokesman Sharif Shoukry said: "We wanted to keep this secret, but yes, we are definitely going to play in red.

"Our away strip for the Austrian league already shows red and blue but for the Europa League and the special game in Glasgow, one of the reasons we chose red was to remember 1984.

"It has helped us once and so why shouldn't it help us again? We have a sense of humour and certainly don't want this to be viewed badly in Scotland.

"We had other options knocked back by Uefa so we thought it would be good to wear the all-red strip for the first time since the game in Manchester - but it's not aimed at upsetting Celtic."

Rapid's home kit is green and white and they played the 1984 return leg at Celtic Park in a blue strip.

Pacult's team opened their Europa League campaign with an impressive 3-0 win against Hamburg, while Celtic lost 2-1 to Hapoel Tel-Aviv in Israel.
