Swiss release Yugoslav payments

A miserable end for Yugoslavia against Holland but they still earned a good financial reward
Swiss authorities have released a bonus payment to the Yugoslav national football association after holding it up because of sanctions imposed on the country.

The 7.8m Swiss francs (3.2m) were the national team's reward for reaching the quarter finals of Euro 2000.

But when Uefa tried to transfer the money, it was blocked by the Swiss. Uefa is based in Switzerland and is subject to national law.

Alan Kocher, spokesman for the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, said the money had been blocked as a precaution at the beginning of July because the European Union had told the Swiss that the association was under the control of the government of President Slobodan Milosevic.

New information had now been received which showed that the Yugoslav FA was a private association and not linked to the government, he said.

Swiss authorities had released the money, Kocher confirmed, and Uefa and Fifa had been advised by letter.

Yugoslavia has been under an EU embargo because of the belligerent policies of President Milosevic. Switzerland is not an EU member, but it joined in with the embargo

The Yugoslav team was allowed to take part at Euro 2000, despite political protests.
