Vaduz 2-0 Falkirk (agg 2-1)

Vaduz knocked Falkirk out of the Europa League
Vaduz overturned Falkirk's 1-0 lead in Liechtenstein

Falkirk's Europa League adventure ended at their first qualifying hurdle with an extra time defeat to Vaduz.

The Bairns took a 1-0 lead to Liechtenstein, but Vaduz applied pressure from the kick-off and Emil Noll slotted in on 23 minutes.

Visiting goalkeeper Robert Olejnik helped force the tie to extra time, but Franz Burgmeier scored the winner on 105 minutes.

Falkirk's night was made worse as Carl Finnigan was sent off after full-time.

Bairns manager Eddie May had said prior to the match that he would not ask his side to sit back and defend their slim advantage at the Rheinpark Stadion.

But, employing a more cautious 4-2-3-1 formation, that is the job they were forced to do as the hosts came out strongly to restore parity.

The Liechtenstein cup winners threw players forward, and in the early stages Burgmeier, Michael Stegmayer and Damian Bellon all went close.

And they were rewarded on 23 minutes when the Bairns failed to properly clear a set-piece and centre-half Noll was able to turn Brian McLean and flick past Olejnik's despairing hand.

The home side took heart from their breakthrough, and Olejnik had to look sharp to stop shots from Bellon and Burgmeier from distance.

Midfielder Marc Twaddle missed Falkirk's best chance with a rare effort in the second period, when he headed Burton O'Brien's corner past the post.

More heroics from Olejnik ensured the tie went to extra-time, where substitute Flynn had a glorious extra-time effort blocked by Vaduz goalkeeper Peter Jehle's first save of the contest.

And just as it looked like the visitors were enjoying their best spell of the game, Burgmeier took the wind out their sails just 30 seconds before the midway point of extra time, lashing a shot past Olejnik from 18 yards.

After the final whistle Finnigan was shown a straight red card for an alleged elbow on the Vaduz captain in the tunnel.
