McClaren suffers Dutch Cup agony

Steve McClaren's debut season in Holland ended on a painful note when his Twente Enschede side lost the Dutch Cup final 5-4 on penalties.

After the game against Heerenveen ended all square at 2-2, Youssouf Hersi missed Twente's fifth spot-kick to give their opponents their first Dutch Cup.

"We are in shock after losing this way but I can't blame my players for anything," said McClaren.

"We dominated the second half and I am really proud of their efforts."

Twente lost winger Marko Arnautovic and defender Peter Wisgerhof to injury in the opening 20 minutes and went behind just before the half-hour when Goran Popov struck from close range.

Nine minutes into the second half Elijero Elia fired into the roof of the net to pull Twente level and send the game into extra-time.

Bonaventure Kalou struck eight minutes before the end of extra time to restore Heerenveen's lead only for Hersi's close-range header to make it 2-2.

McClaren, who signed a two-year deal with Twente last summer, was made a tabloid scapegoat following England's 3-2 defeat by Croatia which ended their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2008.

Twente finished runners-up in the Dutch league behind AZ Alkmaar.
