2310: I think it's time to say goodbye for today. What a fabulous day of football, from the action-packed drama of the Premier League to the frankly incomparable spectacle of El Clasico. I'm back tomorrow for a couple more English top-flight games, I'll see you then. Hasta luego.

2303: "Ronaldo deserved the Ballon d'Or, Messi is playing better right now. But can people just stop pettily using any Messi brilliance as an excuse to have a go at Ronaldo? Can we not just appreciate two wonderful players?"
RARD *Keano - Red Legend, Prem's Greatest on 606

Great post. I wholeheartedly agree.

2300: "As far as I'm concerned Messi got the winner. Merry Xmas all. Wooo."
From Lawsy the Geordie, via text on 81111

2257: "Deserved goal from Messi. Just deserts for all the kicks and fouls he has had to endure."

2255: I don't think too many people can complain about that result. Real, under the circumstances, performed quite brilliantly, but in the end Barca just had too much quality and got the goals their dominance deserved. They've played better, but that will mean more to them than any other win this season. Real are now 12 points behind Barca in La Liga.

2252: Full-time Barcelona 2-0 Real Madrid

2250: GOAL Barcelona 2-0 Real Madrid
You can start the car, this one's finished. Thierry Henry races down the right as Barca counter attack and he unselfishly sets up Lionel Messi to dink the ball over the advancing Iker Casillas and wrap it up. In trying to clear the ball off the line, Fabio Cannavaro collides with the post - that looked a bit nasty.

2250: Three minutes of added time.

2250: Iker Casillas has been raging about something for the last couple of minutes and he gets a booking for mouthing off. Barca take Xavi off and bring on Seydou Keita. We are now into injury time.

2247: Alexander Hleb comes on for Samuel Eto'o, with little over two minutes left of normal time. The Cameroonian Real Madrid reject gets a standing ovation.

2247: "Gutted for Casillas. He's been in sensational form tonight. World's best by a mile."
Muambananas on 606

2244: Maybe I'm doing Samuel Eto'o a disservice - he does stick his right leg out and divert the ball past Iker Casillas. It's his 14th league goal of the campaign, his 18th in 20 games this season. An amazing record.

2243: Six minutes plus injury time for Real to throw everything they have at Barcelona.

2241: GOAL Barcelona 1-0 Real Madrid
Not a goal that will live long in the memory and you've got to feel sorry for Iker Casillas. Carles Puyol rises high to win a header from a corner from the right and the ball more hits Samuel Eto'o than he sticks it in the net - it rolls agonisingly past Casillas and, by inches, over the line.

2240: Ten minutes plus stoppages remain in Barcelona.

2239: "What a wonderful move by Real - that deserved a goal, no matter the brilliance at the other end by Barca."

2237: Young Miguel Palanca finds himself one-on-one with Victor Valdes down the Real right and the Barca keeper stands tall to make an impressive block with his body. It's a tale of two goalkeepers at the minute.

2236: Gonzalo Higuain comes off for Real Madrid, with Rafael van der Vaart replacing him.

2234: Iker Casillas comes way out to the Barca left to try and shepherd the ball out, but Thierry Henry keeps it in and only a good tackle from Michel Salgado denies Henry a shot at goal.

2233: "Adam Johnson would be dominating this game."
Zach, London, via text on 81111

2232: Javi Garcia comes on for the spent Guti.

2231: Some of the best goalkeeping you could wish to see. Iker Casillas' pushes away Samuel Eto'o's 20-yard piledrive and then picks himself up in double quick time to deny Lionel Messi from the rebound. Absolutely monumental work from the Spanish number one.

That is a truly magnificent penalty save from right now the world's best goalkeeper. He springs away to his left to push away Samuel Eto'o's spot-kick. Sensational.

2228: Michel Salgado takes out Sergio Busquets as he tries to get on the end of a ball into the real box, and the hosts have a spot-kick.

2226: Real Madrid spectacularly fail to clear a corner and just as it seems Samuel Eto'o is set to score, Iker Casillas jumps out to put him off his shot. Moments later, Lionel Messi fires wide from 20 yards.

2225: Rafa Marquez brings down Raul and he needs to be careful, he's the only Barca man with a yellow card up until now.

2224: Christophe Metzelder has not been put off by his early booking at all, he makes another timely block to stop Samuel Eto'o getting a shooting chance on the edge of the box.

2222: Sergio Busquets does indeed come on, the 20-year-old replacing Eidur Gudjohnsen.

2222: Barcelona are readying midfielder Sergio Busquets on the touchline.

2220: An hour gone and Barca must start to think about making a change. Real will be delighted with how it's gone so far, the onus is on the home team to break them down and that does not look forthcoming. The natives are growing a touch restless.

2216: "I'm at the Barca game saw the referee fall and slip on his backside. I'm laughing on my own as I'm here for work. If anyone is to appreciate that it's you Stevo."
Anonymous via text on 81111

2215: Samuel Eto'o hits a sizzler of a volley that flashes over Iker Casillas' goal with the keeper at full stretch, that would have burst the net that one. Lionel Messi had earlier taken too long to shoot - maybe the knocks he picked up early on are starting to take their toll.

2214: Rafa Marquez slides in brilliantly to win the ball from Royston Drenthe and then rolls around like he has been shot after the Dutchman's trailing leg caught him. Again, nothing in it.

2212: Thierry Henry tumbles in the box as Dani Alves over-hits a cross from the right. Wasn't a penalty, no way.

2209: Raul glances Guti's corner wide as Real nearly cash in on some sloppy Barca play. He's in fabulous form, the Madrid captain - his second goal in midweek against Zenit was truly magnificent.

2208: "Biased as always Stevo - you could mention how Messi is rolling about on the floor every time he gets breathed on only to get back up seconds later perfectly fine..."
ManUtdChampionsOfEurope on 606
Join the debate on 606

Perfectly fine? You didn't see him limping, then.

2207: Lionel Messi picks out Samuel Eto'o at the back stick and his half-volley is fisted away by Iker Casillas.

2206: "I'm a Barca fan having lived there a few years ago. However, I spotted Madrid at 5-1 for the win, so put 50 on, figuring that I'd be win-win. So, if Barca or Madrid win I'm laughing - which means we're guaranteed a draw. Sorry everyone."
Mac, via text on 81111

2204: The second half gets started in the Camp Nou. More pressure on Barca in this 45 minutes, surely.

2159: You'd have to say for the purist, it's a shame the referee didn't cut out the cynical fouling right from the start. But for those of you blaming Real Madrid for their tactics, will anyone be complaining in the Spanish capital if they kick their way to a 1-0 win that gets them back in the title race? Juande Ramos might have just got this right you know.

2157: "As a Madrid fan it's a shame to see them resort to kicking Barca off the park, but we actually have no other way of competing with such an injury hit squad."
Michael in Glasgow, via text on 81111

2153: "Stevo, if you were a football manager, the FA would need to employ a disciplinary panel just for you! I fully agree with you on this occasion though, shocking tactics. Messi is destined for the winner, however."

2148: Referee Luis Medina Cantalejo plays approximately no seconds of injury time, despite about 15 stoppages for bad fouls and some time wasting from the visitors. Honestly, and we complain about officials in England. We ought to thank our lucky stars on this evidence.

2146: Half-time Barcelona 0-0 Real Madrid

2145: Samuel Eto'o appeals for a penalty as his left-foot shot hits Christophe Metzelder near his shoulder area, but it's never a spot-kick.

2143: Royston Drenthe is next in the book - this time, what a surprise, for a foul on Lionel Messi. Sorry if I sound unnecessarily high and mighty, but this is pathetic.

2142: Rafael Marquez takes out some retribution on Real with a shocking tackle from behind on Gonzalo Higuain after Lionel Messi goes down under a challenge from Raul - and Marquez is booked for his troubles. Barca are furious.

2140: Samuel Eto'o tries a one-two with Xavi but the Cameroonian's touch is too heavy and Iker Casillas gathers. Lionel Messi is out of the game right now.

2137: Wesley Sneijder is injured and is replaced by young Miguel Palanca, who usually plays up front in the reserves - he has gone to play out on the right, by the looks of it.

2136: Real are really in this game, it's not so one-sided as it was at the start - Barca are not used to not scoring early on this season, especially at home. They may have to be patient today.

2134: Barca are struggling to open Real up here - the visitors look more likely to create a clear-cut chance when they go forward. Barca are seeing a lot of the ball but they need to be more direct. Thierry Henry races past Michael Salgado down the left and his cross-shot is beaten away by Iker Casillas.

2131: "Madrid to win but with only nine men!"
Pedro, via text on 81111

2129: Sergio Ramos is booked for a ridiculous late, sliding challenge on Lionel Messi. The locals are furious - I wouldn't be surprised if Messi limps off during this one.

2129: "Messi is the nearest thing I've seen to George Best - incredible balance and timing. He also used to get kicked up in the air every game but would just shrug it off and score a goal. 3-0 Barca with a brace for Messi."

2127: The corner isn't cleared by Barca and it falls for Gonzalo Higuain to lash a volley over the bar from close-range. They've just about had the two best chances, Real.

2127: Got to score. Victor Valdes spares Barca's blushes as Real counter again and Raul plays through Royston Drenthe, one-on-one, but the keeper races from his line to block the Dutchman's effort.

2126: The texts on 81111 have gone quiet. No-one at Camp Nou, are they?

2125: Royston Drenthe cross for Wesley Sneijder to volley goalwards, Victor Valdes tipping the ball over. Nice move from the visitors.

2124: "Ramos may have learnt the phrase 'park the bus' by the looks of it..."

2122: Wow, the ref has got a yellow card on him! Christophe Metzelder scythes down Samuel Eto'o and is finally cautioned.

2119: Eric Abidal waltzes through the Real defence and as he is about to pull the trigger, Christophe Metzelder makes a fabulous block.

2119: Barca are playing things down the left for a moment, probably to give Lionel Messi a break. Thierry Henry is fouled next, but no free-kick is given. Maybe the ref is trying to make it a fair contest?

2116: Pep Guardiola comes to the touchline for a chat with referee Luis Medina Cantalejo. Lionel Messi has been fouled four times already and there hasn't been a yellow card. Not what this game is about.

2115: I've got bad news - Lionel Messi is struggling. He's limping, the little Argentine, after a foul a few moments ago from Wesley Sneijder. He is fouled again moments later by Fernando Gago, this is just ridiculous.

2114: Real are giving Barca far too much space on the Barca right. Messi's playing as a right-winger and causing havoc each time he comes forward. Real are asking for trouble here."
Zippy, George and Bungle on 606

2112: Barca are camped in the Real half. The visitors will rely on quick counter-attacks and they have more than enough players capable of doing that.

2109: Leo Messi plays a brilliant one-two with Samuel Eto'o but Fabio Cannavaro makes a fabulous last-ditch tackle. If Barca win today, they will go 12 points clear of Real in the league.

2108: Thierry Henry, buoyed by a hat-trick last week, rifles in a shot that flashes just wide from 30 yards.

2107: Lionel Messi lays down a marker for the evening, turning Guti inside out before hammering in a right-foot shot that Iker Casillas does really well to save with his right hand.

2106: "Looks like Real need Adam Johnson out there tonight."

2104: "I hope Messi can match Ashley Young's performance today!"
Dav, via text on 81111

2103: Well, Real have got a plan to stop Lionel Messi - Sergio Ramos sends the Argentine flying and gets away without a booking. Hmm.

2102: You would struggle to believe the atmosphere in the Camp Nou. It's absolutely electric. Michel Salgado concedes the first free-kick, going straight through Thierry Henry.

2101: We are under way. Oh my.

2100: The players are out at the Camp Nou, the locals have been through their rendition of the Barca anthem and it's absolutely chucking it down in the Catalan capital. Honestly, that rain in Spain...

2057: Oops, almost forgot a Stevo Predo. Here you go, El Clasico fans...
Barcelona 3-1 Real Madrid

2054: "Last season Real destroyed Barca, but Barca are a stronger side now. Ronaldinho's and Deco's inflated egos are now out of the way and the real stars are performing: Messi and Eto'o. Barca to win comfortably."
Rooney on 606

2051: "Barca essentially lining up with four strikers, Real with a world-class defence - something's got to give! PS - First ever BBC La Liga live text comment to be shown?"
Nick, Edinburgh, via text on 81111

Yes, but careful - Eidur Gudjohnsen has been re-born as a central midfielder these days, and a very good one too.

2048: Real, on the other hand, are struggling. Injuries to several key men have hampered them badly and it's by far their strongest possible team that Juande Ramos picks today. Though with Raul up front and Iker Casillas in between the sticks, they are capable of anything.

2046: Barca are flying this season under the guidance of club legend Pep Guardiola, who cuts a dashing figure on the touchline these days. They defend more convincingly, they have the best passing midfield in world football and their attack is on fire, with Lionel Messi comfortably the world's best footballer right now. Comparisons have been made with Johan Cruyff's 1990s Dream Team, but as Guardiola will know, they've won nothing yet.

2041: What a week it's been for Spanish football, with the stunning appointment of Juande Ramos as the new coach of Real Madrid, replacing Bernd Schuster, who was frankly asking to be sacked. "It's impossible to win in the Camp Nou," said the German after their 4-3 home defeat by Sevilla last weekend. Still, I'd guess his four million euro compensation payout will ease his troubles somewhat. As for Ramos, can he guide his new charges to a most unlikely win? Don't dare bet against it.
Ramos replaces Schuster at Real

2036: I feel like a kid in a sweet shop. Messi, Eto'o, Xavi, Casillas, Sneijder, Raul - it's a cast list of superstars and it's the one everyone wants to see. This game is screened globally - for all the marketing power of the Premier League, this is the one fixture in world football that cannot be matched elsewhere.
