Car-jacking drama for Roma star

Roma's French defender Philippe Mexes
Mexes was left out of France's squad for the European Championship

The family of Roma star Philippe Mexes suffered a terrifying ordeal after criminals stole his car with his daughter asleep on the back seat.

Mexes' wife had left two-year-old Eva in the car while she carried the couple's son into their house.

The men drove off in the Mercedes with Eva in the back seat, but later abandoned it with the child unharmed.

The French international was not present at the incident because he was at Roma's pre-season training camp.

The Serie A club said that Mexes had been given a day off from training to be with his family.

The car had been dumped in a small piazza nearby, possibly due to the presence of Eva, and left with its doors open.

On seeing the scene, a passer-by called police and Mexes was soon reunited with his daughter, who was said to be still asleep.

Mexes, who joined the Italian club Roma from Auxerre in 2004, has eight caps for France but was controversially left out of their Euro 2008 squad.
