GOALFLASHES AND MAJOR INCIDENTS (all times BST)
AS THE GROUPS STAND
Group E: It is a case of deja vu for Lyon who beat Real Madrid for the second successive season. But their result is only good enough to see them claim second spot after Steaua Bucuresti's sensational performance in Kiev.
Group F: Manchester United scored three - the same they managed in the whole of their Champions League campaign last season - but it's the three points that will matter more to Sir Alex Ferguson and they go into pole position in the group.
Group G: The late goal against will take some of the gloss off for Arsenal but all in all it was a good opening night. The visiting fans should enjoy themselves in Hamburg after watching that. The Gunners top the group.
Group H: You don't need to be Nostradamus to predict that AC Milan will win the final group. Well, with one match gone that's where they are already. Lille have never won a Champions League match away from home, but should be satisfied with the point they picked up at Anderlecht.
2135: FULL-TIME The whistle goes at Old Trafford and the match finishes at Hamburg shortly after. Two good results for the English clubs who go straight to the top of their groups. Celtic can take heart from a battling performance at Manchester United.
2134: GOAL Hamburg 1-2 Arsenal
That was a warning shot from Hamburg and Arsenal did not heed it. Captain David Jarolim skips through the Arsenal defence and pulls the ball back for Boubacar Sanogo to easily finish. It is the first time in more than 853 minutes that Jens Lehmann has conceded a Champions League goal. 853 minutes! That's 14 hours and 13 minutes!
2131: A late scare for Arsenal as Piotr Trochowski cracks a long-range shot onto the bar and Mehdi Mahdavikia nets the rebound, but the Hamburg substitute is flagged for offside.
2128: Manchester United's Wayne Rooney trudges off. He looks knackered as he is replaced by Kieran Richardson.
2125: Artur Boruc is eclipsing Iker Casillas in the race for the 'Best Goalkeeper of the Night Award'. Celtic substitute Paul Telfer climbs to head the ball away but only directs it on his own goal. The Pole dives low to his left and turns the ball on to the post. Great stuff.
2022 GOAL Anderlecht 1-1 Lille
Nicolas Fauvergue pulls Lille level with 10 minutes left on the clock. The substitute's shot from Peter Odemwingie's low cross goes in off the post.
2020: GOAL Dynamo Kiev 1-4 Steaua Bucuresti
It is a second of the night for Nicolae Dica with a neat finish and that's it for Dynamo Kiev for sure. Coming into the game they had never lost to Romanian opposition. They have now.
2119: Gilberto Silva misses a gilt edged chance with a header to make it three for Arsenal. It probably will not make much difference though as 10-man Hamburg look to have given up the ghost.
2118: GOAL AC Milan 3-0 AEK Athens
There's one. Kaka finishes with aplomb from the penalty spot after English referee Mike Riley deems Vaggelis Moras to have fouled Filippo Inzaghi in the box.
2115: Where have all the goals gone?
2112: Wayne Rooney's through one-on-one but Artur Boruc makes a fine save to keep Celtic in the game.
2110: Rio Ferdinand races forward and clips an inviting low cross into the box but somehow Wayne Rooney fails to turn it in. It slides wide of the goal and the returning striker has looked a little off the pace tonight after his time on the sidelines through suspension.
2109: Robin van Persie goes close to making it three for Arsenal but the replacement Hamburg keeper Stefan Wachter is equal to the Dutchman's delightful right-footed free-kick - just.
2105: Louis Saha goes close again to getting his hat-trick but Artur Boruc is down well to his right to save the Frenchman's powerful header from Darren Fletcher's cross.
2103: What about the other goalless game? FC Copenhagen have won only two of their last eight European home games while Benfica have won only one of their last 12 Champions League away games.
2102: Still no goals at Porto v CSKA Moscow. These two have met once before three years ago. The score then? 0-0.
2059: Rio Ferdinand keeps his cool to clip a whipped Kenny Miller cross behind for a corner with a composed side-footed volley. Celtic cannot create anything from the corner.
2056: That is the end of David Beckham's night as Real Madrid boss Fabio Capello pulls him off and puts on Guti instead.
2055: GOAL Hamburg 0-2 Arsenal
Tomas Rosicky opens his Arsenal account with an absolute pearler. Remember that goal he scored against the USA in the World Cup? Picture that, but it has gone in the other corner, the top left as he sees it.
2053: Amazing news from Lyon's Stade Gerland. Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has not had to make a save for the last five minutes.
2049: As in the first half, Hamburg and Arsenal get going a little after the rest.
2048: GOAL Manchester United 3-2 Celtic
The SPL leaders are caught cold after the break. Thomas Gravesen's pass is cut out by Paul Scholes who releases Louis Saha. The Frenchman's shot is saved but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer follows up to fire in.
2046: The action resumes around the grounds.
2045: Only two games are still awaiting a goal and with 14 going in in the first half groups E to H should eclipse the 22 goals groups A to D got 24 hours ago.
2032: HALF-TIME The whistle goes on a thrilling first-half at Old Trafford. At the AOL Arena the referee is greeted by a cacophony of jeers after blowing for half-time. They may not like the penalty decision but it was the correct call from the Swedish referee Peter Froejdfeldt.
2028: GOAL Dynamo Kiev 1-3 Steaua Bucuresti
Nicolae Dica puts Steaua in the driving seat in Kiev with a wonderful free-kick from 25 yards. A great goal.
2027: GOAL Manchester United 2-2 Celtic
Shunsuke Nakamura levels matters at Old Trafford with a sublime free-kick, arching the ball majestically into the corner of Edwin van der Sar's net from 25 yards.
2026: GOAL AC Milan 2-0 AEK Athens
Two goals in the space of a minute in Group H and AC Milan double their advantage. French midfielder Yoann Gourcuff gets his name on the scoresheet, meeting Kaka's cross from the right with an unstoppable header.
2025: GOAL Anderlecht 1-0 Lille
Nicolas Pareja breaks the deadlock in Belgium after getting on the end of Mbark Boussoufa's corner and heading high into the net.
2024: GOAL Manchester United 2-1 Celtic
Aiden McGeady's pass plays Thomas Gravesen into trouble and Manchester United are on the attack. Paul Scholes plays in Louis Saha and the Frenchman's shot has enough to get over the line despite the on-rushing Artur Boruc getting a hand to the ball.
2022: What a chance for Celtic. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink has a free header from Shunsuke Nakamura's free-kick but heads over.
2021: Iker Casillas should be getting overtime tonight. Birthday boy Fabio Cannavaro is being given the run around by Fred but after the Brazilian plays in Anthony Reveillere the Real keeper is on hand yet again to deny Lyon.
2018: But for Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, Lyon would be out of sight. Juninho Pernambucano drills a free-kick in from downtown and after Casillas punches it clear he has to be on his toes to parry Fred's follow-up shot.
2017: Manchester United are forced into a change. Ryan Giggs looks to have tweaked a hammy in racing through for that ball which led to the penalty and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer comes on.
2016: GOAL Lyon 2-0 Real Madrid
Lyon are on fire and double their lead with former Chelsea midfielder Tiago sliding in and finding the net after being played in by Sidney Govou.
2014: GOAL Manchester United 1-1 Celtic
Artur Boruc gets his fingertips to a Louis Saha penalty but cannot keep it out and Manchester United are level. The Polish keeper is to blame for giving the hosts such an easy way to get back into the game after rushing off his line to challenge Ryan Giggs on the right of his area. It was a soft decision though.
2013: Arsenal are being forced into a change with Justin Hoyte replacing Kolo Toure. Manager Arsene Wenger will hope it does not disturb his side's solid start as William Gallas moves into the heart of the defence and Hoyte drops in at left-back.
2009: GOAL Dynamo Kiev 1-2 Steaua Bucuresti
The Romanians are back in front as Valentin Badea dives to meet Nicolae Dica's chip into the box and head in off the post.
2005: GOAL Manchester United 0-1 Celtic
A mistake from Rio Ferdinand under a high Celtic clearance and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink makes no mistake. He races into the area and drives a shot beyond Edwin van der Saar. The visiting supporters are going wild.
2003: GOAL AC Milan 1-0 AEK Athens
Blimey! It's a busy old night early doors. Filippo Inzaghi gives AC Milan the lead, heading in a left-wing cross from skipper Paolo Maldini.
2002: Louis Saha goes close again for Manchester United. He watches the dropping ball like a hawk on the edge of the area and then thunders a volley just over the bar.
2001: GOAL Dynamo Kiev 1-1 Steaua Bucuresti
Dynamo are level with a goal from Serhiy Rebrov after a neat one-two with Diogo Rincon. It is his first Champions League goal for six years!
1959: It is almost two to Lyon and would have been but for a tremendous save from Iker Casillas. The Real keeper is alert to save Florent Malouda's towering header low to his right.
1957: GOAL Hamburg 0-1 Arsenal
Back at the AOL Arena, reserve keeper Stefan Wachter goes the right way from the spot-kick but cannot stop the shot and Gilberto Silva puts Arsenal in front. Gunners skipper Thierry Henry scored from the spot at the weekend and now it is his stand-in who finds the net.
1956: GOAL Lyon 1-0 Real Madrid
A goal for Lyon made in Brazil. Juninho Pernambucano floats a long pass forward to the on-rushing Fred who dinks a delightful lob over Iker Casillas and into the Real net.
1955: RED CARD
Hamburg goalkeeper Sascha Kirschstein is sent off for bringing down Arsenal's Robin van Persie in the box after the Dutchman was played in on the right by a cross-field pass from Emmanuel Adebayor. A keeper going off early in Champions League match? The Gunners know all about that after last season's final.
1952: Manchester United go close at Old Trafford. Louis Saha stoops to get a head on Gary Neville's clipped cross and flashes his header across the goal but it is wide of the post.
1951: Emmanuel Eboue slips on the turf at the AOL Arena but Gilberto Silva drops deep to recover the situation with a firm tackle on Raphael Wicky to cut short his mazy run.
1950: Juninho Pernambucano's not known for his tackling - re. the early challenge on Mahamadou Diarra - but he is known for his free-kicks and that is a scorcher which stings the hands of Iker Casillas as the Real keeper palms the ball away.
1948: GOAL Dynamo Kiev 0-1 Steaua Bucuresti
The first goal of the game and it is a bit of a shock with Sorin Gionea scoring for Steaua, who are 18/1 outsiders to win Group E.
1946: Arsenal begin their Champions League campaign in Hamburg, where the Germans are playing English opponents for the first time since they lost the European Cup final to Nottingham Forest in 1980.
1945: Celtic kick off at Old Trafford and Lyon and Real Madrid are under way at the Stade Gerland which is a bit smoky after a few flares are let off. Real's Mahamadou Diarra is clattered by former team-mate Juninho Pernambucano after just 43 seconds.
1943: Hamburg and Arsenal are slow out for their match, and it may be because of a kit clash. The clubs share the same sponsor so the Gunners are wearing shirts sporting 'Dubai' instead.
1941: The teams are out at Old Trafford for the 'Battle of Britain' and that is the last mention of that cliche, for sure. Celtic are in stripes, not hoops.
1940: It's all smiles at the San Siro, while in Lyon, Real Madrid's Antonio Cassano and Ruud van Nistelrooy are high-fiving all the mascots.
1938: Players start to gather in the tunnels in the bowels of the eight stadiums.
TEAM NEWS
Group E
In one of the ties of the night, a strong Lyon side will be looking to get the better of the Real Madrid, as they did last season.
