PSV Eindhoven 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool held PSV to a draw in their Champions League Group C opener as Steven Gerrard started on the bench.

Liverpool had plenty of the ball early on but PSV had the better chances with Arouna Kone hitting the bar and Ibrahim Afellay testing keeper Jose Reina.

Kone missed a good chance in the second half with only Reina to beat, while Edison Mendez twice went close.

But in the closing stages Liverpool twice hit the woodwork through Dirk Kuyt's shot and Gerrard's half-volley.

Gerrard eventually came on to replace Craig Bellamy and he came desperately close to snatching the win for Liverpool with a wonderfully inventive effort.

The Liverpool midfielder turned quickly to hit a shot that beat PSV goalkeeper Gomes only for his effort to cannon off the bar.

Sami Hyypia was another Liverpool substitute with Daniel Agger preferred to the Finnish central defender.

Agger had an impressive game for Liverpool alongside Jamie Carragher as Liverpool managed to not concede a goal for the first time this season.

Without Gerrard, it was left to Momo Sissoko to provide the drive for Liverpool in midfield.

Sissoko had a typically combative game, but he did not have the best of starts, casually conceding possession that allowed Kone the space to surge towards the Liverpool goal.

Carragher did his best to keep Kone on his left foot but the Ivory Coast striker still managed to unleash a shot that came back off the crossbar with Reina well beaten.

Midway through the first half Reina did better to save Afellay's rising shot.

Liverpool enjoyed lots of possession but proved less successful in testing PSV's Brazilian keeper Gomes.

A flowing move involving Jermaine Pennant and Bellamy freed Fabio Aurelio, but the Brazilian's shot was well wide.

The partnership of Bellamy and Kuyt provided Liverpool with speed as well as some some intelligent running.

Just before the break Bellamy managed to turn and shoot but his effort lacked power and Gomes comfortably gathered.

Soon after Kuyt scampered clear but Carlos Salcido was quick to get in blocking tackle.

Bellamy had better luck getting past Salcido, but just before the Welshman shot the ball touched his arm.

Early in the second half Kone had PSV's best chance, but with just Reina to beat the Ivory Coast striker miscued.

Mendez also started to get forward and he went close with two long-range shots.

PSV's rejuvenation prompted Rafael Benitez to replace Sissoko with Xabi Alonso and not long after Gerrard made his entry.

Kuyt went desperately close for Liverpool with a raking shot that hit the post as did Gerrard with that quick turn and shot.
