Clockwatch: Arsenal 1-0 Villarreal

Goalflashes and major incidents (all times BST):

2139: FULL-TIME Arsenal 1-0 Villarreal
Villarreal get a free-kick in a dangerous position but the referee does not allow them to take it. The Spaniards are far from happy, but the home fans are after seeing their side hold on. The tie is far from over but Kolo Toure's goal and a ninth clean sheet in a row means the Gunners are in control.

2137: Dennis Bergkamp is denied what would have been a hugely popular second goal for Arsenal when Javi Venta pulls off a last-ditch interception to deny the Dutchman a certain tap-in.

2136: Villarreal are passing the ball around confidently and Juan Riquelme gets one eye on goal, but the Argentina international fires his shot wide.

2135: The fourth official's board shows five minutes of stoppage time. Arsenal will kick themselves if they concede now.

2133: Arsenal blow a great chance to put some daylight between themselves and Villarreal, but with Kolo Toure shaping to volley Gilberto Silva's flick gets in the way and the ball is cleared.

2131: The Gunners look like seeing out the final minutes of the game, with Villarreal looking unable to pierce their backline.

2124: Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is clearly not happy with a containment job as he makes a double Dutch substitution - Dennis Bergkamp and Robin van Persie coming on for Alexandr Hleb and Fredrik Ljungberg.

2120: Villarreal are enjoying the bulk of the possession but Arsenal appear content to sit back and protect their lead, perhaps with the hope of hitting the Spaniards on the break.

2107: Arsenal again have a goal ruled out through the offside flag and again it looks a questionable decision, with Robert Pires looking to have time his run perfectly to meet a Alexandr Hleb pass.

2100: Arsenal are moving into fifth gear and Emmanuel Eboue drives into the box before feeding Thierry Henry whose attempted dink of a shot is headed off the line.

2052: Gilberto Silva is given time and space on the edge of the area to fire in a shot but he fails to connect cleanly and it flies wide.

2051: Villarreal's Alessio Tacchinardi tries his luck from long range but there is little danger to Arsenal's record run without conceding in Europe - which stood at 784 at half-time.

2049: The second period starts with neither side opting to make any changes.

2033: The first half comes to an end after over three minutes of injury time. Arsenal lead through Kolo Toure's first goal of the season, but Villarreal have looked dangerous.

2030: Arsenal need the half-time whistle to go after some nervous moments at the back. Jens Lehmann is far from comfortable in punching away a Juan Riquelme free-kick and then Gilberto Silva is fortunate to get away without conceding a penalty after a clumsy tackle on Jose Mari in area.

2026: GOAL Arsenal 1-0 Villarreal
The deadlock is broken at Highbury by Kolo Toure. It starts from a short corner, with Thierry Henry finding Alexandr Hleb and he drives the ball in for Toure to prod home.

2022: The action is end-to-end as Thierry Henry dances past a defender and drills in a cross that Fredrik Ljungberg is close to finishing off.

2021: There is another scare at the back for Arsenal as Kolo Toure slips, letting in Diego Forlan but the Gunners defender Toure recovers well to clear his cross.

2018: Arsenal twice threaten as Robert Pires finds himself in on goal but the ball is taken off his toe as he goes to finish. From the corner there is a mad scramble which ends with Gilberto Silva's shot being blocked by Marcos Senna and looping just over the bar.

2010: Arsenal are straight back on the attack with Robert Pires curling a shot just high and wide from the edge of the box.

2009: Villarreal have their first sight on goal from a Juan Riquelme free-kick which is straight at Jens Lehmann. The keeper gathers at the second attempt after spilling the first.

2006: The action gets back under way and Fredrik Ljungberg's pace takes him into the box, but the angle is too tight and he can only fire into the sidenetting.

2003: The referee Konrad Plautz has had enough of the squirrel and stops the game. He goes after it and looks set to give a yellow card for time wasting, but cannot catch the cheeky little fella who eventually leaves the field (probably for an early bath).

1959: The squirrel is clearly not happy with the attention Thierry Henry is getting as it makes a return to the pitch.

1957: Thierry Henry has the ball in the back of net but it is chalked off for offside. Video replays show that it was an incorrect decision, but the space Arsenal are getting in the final third is encouraging for the Gunners.

1956: A call of nature at Highbury as a squirrel appears on the pitch before wandering off into the stands.

1955: More success from another corner, this time it is Philippe Senderos who is given a free header but his effort is well over the bar.

1953: Arsenal are getting some joy from set pieces and Thierry Henry's corner is headed just wide by Gilberto Silva.

1951: Kolo Toure's attempt to head clear a long ball falls at the feet of Diego Forlan, but his highly ambitious effort from all of 40 yards out is closer to clearing the stand than finding the back of the net.

1950: From Thierry Henry's free-kick Arsenal waste a great chance to go in front. Villarreal fail to clear and Kolo Toure fires wide from close range when he should have done better.

1948: Matthieu Flamini gets down the left and is hacked down by a crude challenge from Cesar Arzo, earning an early yellow card for the Yellow Submarines.

1945: The last European game to be staged at Highbury - Arsenal's home for 93 years - gets under way with the home fans in good voice.

Team news:

Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas is passed fit after a foot problem and is named alongside Fredrik Ljungberg and Robert Pires in midfield, with Jose Reyes suspended.

Youngster Theo Walcott was once again the only Englishman in the squad as he took his place on the bench.

Villarreal have two changes from their previous Champions League match - regular keeper Sebastien Viera giving way to Mariano Barbosa and Cesar Arzo coming in for Juan Manuel Pena.
