Newcastle 1-2 Deportivo
Deportivo win 4-2 on aggregate

Jorge Andrade
Newcastle's involvement in European football this season is over after Deportivo la Coruna won their Intertoto Cup semi-final 4-2 on aggregate.

The Magpies, 2-1 down from the first leg, went ahead through James Milner after Lee Bowyer helped on a cross.

But Jorge Andrade lofted over Shay Given to level for Deportivo, who then took the lead through Pedro Munitis after an error from Robbie Elliott.

Alan Shearer and Shola Ameobi both went close but Newcastle could not recover.

Now Deportivo will play Marseille - who beat Lazio 4-1 on aggregate - in one of three Intertoto finals, each offering a place in this season's Uefa Cup.

The Tyneside club's summer signings of Scott Parker and Emre had each started in midfield as they made their debuts.

And, as Newcastle got to grips with their new look midfield, they made a patchy start as they took 16 minutes to work their first shot on goal.

Shearer played a pass into the run of Emre and the Turkish international's 20-yard left-foot strike was comfortably saved.

Deportivo had a glorious chance to give themselves breathing space when a cross reached Joan Capdevila but he shot over from just a few yards.

Shearer had a trademark header palmed away at full-stretch by Deportivo keeper Jose Molina before the low-key match then sparked to life.

Players from both camps clashed after Shearer's challenge on Molina prior to Newcastle taking the lead.

Milner was in the right place at the right time to poke home a near-post shot only for Deportivo to grab a goal on the stroke of half-time.

Jean Alain Boumsong came out to clear a Deportivo free-kick but missed out to Aldo Duscher and his header into the space left by the Magpies central defender fell for Andrade to convert.

It got worse for Newcastle shortly after the break when a defensive mistake by Robbie Elliott allowed Munitis in for the simplest of finishes to put Deportivo 4-2 up on aggregate.

Shearer blazed over at the far post as the home side pressed forward while substitute striker Shola Ameobi has a shot saved by an inspired Molina after some neat work.
