Pat Fenlon's Shels could not find a way through the Steaua defence
Eircom League title holders Shelbourne failed to carve out a first-leg lead as they drew 0-0 with former European champions Steaua Bucharest in Dublin.

But Pat Fenlon's team will go to Romania confident they can match last season's run to the third qualifying round in the Champions League.

Shelbourne had keeper Dean Delaney to thank for a great point-blank save from Nicolita's powerful volley early on.

"We are quite happy with 0-0," said Shelbourne midfielder Ollie Cahill.

""If we can nick a goal out there anything can happen.

"It was not a great game to watch but we kept it tight. We did not want to concede an away goal.

"They had a lot of possession in the second half but did not open us up and we did not make them work as much as we wanted to."

Shelbourne: Delaney, Heary, Rogers, Crawley, Hawkins, Baker, Cahill, Stuart Byrne, Moore, Jason Byrne, Crowe.
Subs: Williams, O'Neill, Fitzpatrick, Harris, Crawford, Ryan, Fleming.

Steaua Bucuresti: Khomutovsky, Radoi, Dica, Bostina, Nesu, Nicolita, Iacob, Ogararu, Paraschiv, Ghionea, Lovin.
Subs: Toma, Oprita, Balan, Baciu, Cristea, Dinita, Keca.

Referee: Romans Lajuks (Latvia)
