Marks out of 10 for Chelsea and Liverpool in their Champions League first-leg tie at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea
Petr Cech - 8: Did not have too much to do, but kept his concentration to save well from Riise and brilliantly from Baros.
Glen Johnson - 6: Allowed Riise too much room early in the game but the young defender got better as the game progressed.
Ricardo Carvalho - 6: Had a couple of nervous moments but otherwise he was largely untested by the Liverpool attackline.
John Terry - 8: Twice he went close to capping a flawless defensive display with chances to score the game's only goal.
William Gallas - 6: Again did a fine job as a makeshift full-back. Got forward well to create a chance for Lampard.
Tiago - 6: Handed a starting role in the absence of the injured Damien Duff and responded with a decent all-round effort.
Joe Cole - 6: Had a very effective opening 45 minutes and looked Chelsea's best chance of an opening but Traore got the better of him after the break.
Claude Makelele - 6: Provided the usual protection to the Blues' defence and rarely failed to pick out a Chelsea team-mate.
Frank Lampard - 6: He missed an absolute sitter in the first half and was also disappointing with his free-kicks but ran his socks off.
Didier Drogba - 5: Missed two glorious chances to put Chelsea ahead. Too often he follows a good show of strength with a poor finish or choosing the wrong option. A disappointing display.
Eidur Gudjohnsen - 6: Caused Liverpool problems in the first half running from deep and picking out opponents with some precise passing but faded.
Substitutes
Arjen Robben (Replaced Tiago, 59 minutes) - 5: His arrival created a buzz among the Chelsea fans but he was unable to show what he was capable of.
Marteja Kezman (Replaced Cole, 78 minutes) - 6: Booked within two minutes of coming on. Put himself about but unable to break down the Reds backline.
Liverpool
Jerzy Dudek - 6: Almost caught out by a spinning ball but otherwise he had an surprisingly quiet evening.
Steve Finnan - 6: A tidy display in defence. Must have feared the arrival of Robben down his flank but remained solid.
Djimi Traore - 7: His battle with Cole was one of the game's highlights. Did well and produced a vital last-ditch tackle to deny him a run on goal.
Jamie Carragher - 9: (STAR MAN): Mr Dependable was once again as solid as a rock at the back and even had claims for a penalty.
Sami Hyypia - 7: Beaten for pace by Cole but recovered brilliantly. His partnership with Carragher is blossoming.
Steven Gerrard - 6: A passionate performance but he was unable to stamp his authority on the game as the two midfields cancelled each out.
John-Arne Riise - 7: Had one of their best chances but shot at Cech. Provided good service when he saw the ball.
Igor Biscan - 7: A tireless performance in helping out Liverpool's under-pressure backline. A real team effort.
Xabi Alonso - 6: Did not see enough of the ball to hurt Chelsea with his passing. Booked and will miss second leg.
Luis Garcia - 5: Too often the Spaniard was wasteful when in possession and he offered little as an attacking force.
Milan Baros - 5: Like Garcia he was poor with the ball when his side needed him to keep hold of the ball. Went close with a glancing header.
Substitutes
Djibril Cisse (Replaced Baros, 65 minutes) - 6: Could have scored within three minutes of coming on but fired over from tough angle.
Harry Kewell (Replaced Biscan, 87 minutes) - 5: First appearance since the Carling Cup final. A poor pass was his only contribution.
Vladimir Smicer (Replaced Garcia, 93 minutes) - 6:
Thrown on as the Reds looked to waste some time late on. Did not get a touch.
