Monaco 0-2 PSV Eindhoven
PSV win 3-0 on aggregate

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink heads in the opener for PSV
PSV Eindhoven secured their place in the last eight of the Champions League with a comfortable victory over Monaco.

The Dutch side doubled their one-goal advantage from the first leg when Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink powered a header in from Mark Van Bommel's corner.

DaMarcus Beasley made it 2-0 two minutes after coming on as substitute, converting Philip Cocu's square pass.

Monaco's night went from bad to worse when full-back Gael Givet was sent off for an ugly foul on Jefferson Farfan.

Monaco spurned good early chances, with midfielder Jaroslav Plasil smashing one effort straight at a defender after 12 minutes, before wildly striking over goalkeeper Gomes' bar soon after.

That was followed by several long-range efforts by Uruguayan midfielder Ernesto Chevanton that also failed to trouble the PSV keeper.

It was cruel on the South American who worked tirelessly all night, and had a goal disallowed five minutes from time.

Vennegoor of Hesselink's headed goal came against the run of play and it was a case of tightening the defences from then on for the Dutch team.

Monaco's only real credible effort after the break came when Chevanton had his toe-poke of a shot well palmed away by Gomes.

Givet's sending off for a two-footed challenge on Farfan compounded the misery for Didier Deschamps team.

  • Monaco coach Didier Deschamps
"We created chances in the first half, but the players just didn't take them.

"They had one chance on a dead ball situation and they converted it. We had many opportunities but we squandered all of them.

"If we had scored before the interval it would have been a totally different match. After they went 1-0 up it was almost impossible.

"Over the two legs, PSV proved they were a better side than us. They are a strong and solid team."

  • PSV Eindhoven manager Guus Hiddink
"We played an exemplary match, although we were under a bit of pressure in the first half.

"We didn't play enough of the ball in the first half although we managed to get some corners.

"We came here also to try and score, and not just to defend. In the second half we wanted to score another goal, and Beasley came up with it thanks to a superb pass from Cocu.

"That proved fatal for Monaco, but it was a great result for us. We must be the team with the smallest budget of all the qualified teams."

  • The quarter-final draw will take place on Friday 18 March. Any team can be drawn against another and the two legs will be played on 5/6 and 12/13 April.
