The second half action proved much more entertaining than the first with goals flying in around Europe.

Away from the Arsenal and Manchester United games, there were plenty of other good stories around.

Udinese striker Vincenzo Iaquinta scored a hat-trick for his side in a 3-0 win against Panathinaikos, while Barcelona sealed a 2-0 win at Werder Bremen in the other game in Group C.

In United's Group D, Benfica snatched a very late 1-0 win against Lille while in Arsenal's Group B, another late goal, this time by Ajax, earned them a 1-1 draw at Sparta Prague.

In Group A, Juventus had Patrick Vieira sent off late on in their 2-1 win at Club Brugge while Rapid Vienna missed a penalty in their 1-0 defeat by Bayern Munich.

2135: GOAL Benfica 1-0 Lille
Fabrizio Miccoli heads what will surely be a dramatic winner for Benfica two minutes into injury-time after a cross from substitute Mantorras.

2135: FULL-TIME Arsenal 2-1 FC Thun
Dennis Bergkamp is the hero for Arsenal as his late goal wraps up victory. Gilberto Silva scored their first but Nelson Ferreira quickly equalised.

2134: FULL-TIME Villarreal 0-0 Manchester United
United open their campaign with a satisfactory draw but the real talking-point will be Wayne Rooney's sending-off for two successive yellow cards in the second half.

2133: GOAL Sparta Prague 1-1 Ajax
Wesley Sneijder could have grabbed a point for Ajax with his late equaliser as he drives the ball home through a crowded defence.

2133: GOAL Arsenal 2-1 FC Thun
Substitute Dennis Bergkamp could have snatched victory for Arsenal as he battles for the ball in the area, works the ball away from defender Ljubo Milicevic and slots it into the net.

2133: Three minutes additional time will be played at Highbury.

2132: A let-off for Manchester United as Marcos Senna's long-range free-kick bounces off Rio Ferdinand's head and hits the bar.

2131: SENDING-OFF Patrick Vieira (Juventus)
The former Arsenal captain is dismissed for his second yellow card of the night against Club Brugge.

2130: The fans on the North Bank think they have snatched victory as Kolo Toure meets a free-kick eight yards out but his header just creeps past the far post.

2127: GOAL Club Brugge 1-2 Juventus
Jeanvion Matondo sets up an exciting finish by pulling one back with just five minutes remaining after the ball falls kindly for him.

2126: MISSED PENALTY Jozef Valachovic (Rapid Vienna) Vienna miss a great chance to equalise against Bayern Munich when Valachovic fails to score his spot-kick.

2121: Arsenal also make two changes with Owusu-Abeyie and Aleksandr Hleb coming on for Jose Antonio Reyes and Fredrik Ljungberg.

2120: A double substitution for Manchester United as Ryan Giggs and Ji-Sung Park replaces Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldinho holds his nerve to convert a penalty and double Barcelona's lead.

2119: Marcos Senna collects a pass from Juan Pablo Sorin but his shot is well saved by Edwin van der Sar.

It's all over as Vincenzo Iaquinta completes his hat-trick in style with a powerful shot.

Juve double their lead through David Trezeguet.

2115: Arsenal throw on Dennis Bergkamp for Cesc Fabregas in a bid to find the winner.

Vincenzo Iaquinta hits his second of the night as he rounds keeper Mario Galinovic and slots home after collecting a pass from Antonio Di Natale.

2112: Another Arsenal chance as Fredrik Ljungberg runs on to a weak back-header but just pulls the ball wide of the Thun post as he collides with keeper Eldin Jakupovic. Both players need treatment before play can continue.

2108: GOAL Sparta Prague 1-0 Ajax
The goals are starting to fly in now and Miroslav Matusovic fires Sparta into a shock lead after the ball falls to him on the edge of the area.

2107: GOAL Club Brugge 0-1 Juventus
Juve finally take the lead in Belgium thanks to Pavel Nedved, who drills home a low free-kick.

2106: SENDING-OFF Wayne Rooney (Manchester United) The England midfielder is sent off for two successive yellow cards.

The referee books him for a yellow card and as the official walks past him, Rooney sarcastically applauds the decision, with his arms almost going into the referee's face.

The incident happens in front of watching England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, who is among the crowd.

2104: GOAL Rapid Vienna 0-1 Bayern Munich
Paolo Guerrero scores to put the visitors ahead.

2104: Jose Antonio Reyes chases a misplaced backpass and goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic's clearance rebounds off his legs but whistles past the far post.

2101: Arsenal waste possession once again but manage to charge down a Thun shot on the edge of the area.

2059: Thun's Tiago Bernardi wastes a good chance to put his side into the lead as the ball falls to him 12 yards out but he snatches at his shot and blasts it over the bar.

2057: Manchester United's Alan Smith is booked for dissent.

2055: GOAL Arsenal 1-1 FC Thun
Highbury is shocked as the Swiss minnows equalise through Nelson Ferreira, who appears to be trying to put the ball back across the area but sees his looped effort creep over Manuel Almunia and into the far corner.

2053: GOAL Arsenal 1-0 FC Thun
The deadlock is finally broken as Gilberto Silva heads home a corner across goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic from inside the six-yard box.

2053: Diego Forlan wastes a good opportunity for Villarreal as he curls a shot well wide of Manchester United's far post after Juan Pablo Sorin had set him up.

2048: The eight games resume.

The other six games draw to a close with only two goals between them. Barcelona's Anderson Deco scored the first against Werder Bremen and Udinese's Vincenzo Iaquinta hits the other against Panathinaikos.

2032: HALF-TIME Arsenal 0-0 FC Thun
The Gunners go in at the break frustrated by their inability to take any of their chances and down to 10 men after Robin van Persie's late dismissal.

No goals in Spain with each keeper making one superb save.

2029: SENDING-OFF Robin van Persie (Arsenal)
Robin van Persie is given a straight red card after catching Thun defender Alen Orman in the face with his boot while challenging for the ball.

2029: Fredrik Ljungberg tries to force the ball over the line after Thun keeper Eldin Jakupovic fails to hold on to a shot from Jose Antonio Reyes but is penalised for a foul.

2028: Manchester United substitute Kieran Richardson is booked for a foul.

2027: Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas runs at the Thun defence and hammers a shot just past the post.

2026: Cristiano Ronaldo's free-kick is dropped by Villarreal keeper Sebastian Viera and Ruud van Nistelrooy knocked the ball towards goal only for defender Gonzalo Rodriguez to acrobatically hook it clear.

2024: Jose Antonio Reyes crumples to the ground in the Thun area after appearing to pull a muscle when he slipped on the turf. However he returns to the fray after treatment.

2022: Manchester United keeper Edwin van der Sar makes a superb diving save from a hooked shot by Rodolfo Arruabarrena to keep the score goalless in Spain.

Vincenzo Iaquinta puts the Italians ahead by powerfully heading home Damiano Zenoni's cross.

2013: Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze goes down after a challenge and after lengthy treatment is stretchered off the pitch with what looks like an injury to his left knee.

2002: Mikael Silvestre comes close for Manchester United in Villarreal when his header is saved by keeper Sebastian Viera.

1958: GOAL Werder Bremen 0-1 Barcelona
The first goal of the night goes to Barcelona's Anderson Deco, whose shot from the edge of the area deflects off a defender on its way into the net.

1958: Kolo Toure forces Thun keeper Eldin Jakupovic to fist his fiercely-struck free-kick over the bar.

1953: Thun defender Selver Hodzic is booked for a cynical tackle on Jose Antonio Reyes, who had sped past him on the wing.

1949: Better for Arsenal as Robert Pires curls a shot just past Thun's far post from the edge of the area.

1948: Arsenal's Kolo Toure picks up an early booking for a foul on Mauro Lustrinelli in the centre circle.

1945: The eight games kick off around Europe.

Team news:

Arsenal defender Sol Campbell makes his first start of the season and captains the side against FC Thun. Manuel Almunia replaces the suspended Jens Lehmann in goal. Striker Robin van Persie has been passed fit but Thierry Henry is out for six weeks because of a groin injury.

Manchester United welcome back Cristiano Ronaldo, who is back from compassionate leave following the death of his father. He replaces Park Ji-sung while Roy Keane is not being risked at Villarreal because of a slight hamstring strain.
