Feyenoord 3-0 Hearts
Dirk Kuijt celebrates his opening goal for Feyenoord
Hearts were outplayed by a classy Feyenoord side as they lost the opening tie in Group A of the Uefa Cup.

Dirk Kuyt headed the Dutch side in front after 22 minutes and added a neat side-foot volley late in the game.

Hearts offered very little but Kevin McKenna did hit the net with a first half shot only for offside to be cruelly given against Paul Hartley.

Bart Goor clipped in a neat finish midway through the second half as Feyenoord dictated the pace with ease.

The game was just two minutes old when Kuyt forced Hearts keeper Craig Gordon in action with a shot from 30 yards.

Salomon Kalou had the ball in the back of the net for the home team shortly after with an impressive diving header, but the lively forward had strayed offside.

Romeo Castelen was proving to be a handful down the right wing and he was the provider for another Kalou header, this time held by Gordon.

Andy Webster was then on hand to clear Pascal Bosschaart's shot off the line after the Dutch player had rounded Gordon.

But the home side's pressure paid off when Patrick Paauwe's flighted cross was nodded home by Kuijt from six yards.

Karim Saidi was in a clear offside position and in the thick of play but the goal was allowed to stand.

A neat flick from Kalou sent Kuijt free of the Hearts defence but the speedy midfielder shot inches wide after racing into the penalty box.

Hearts then thought they had pulled a goal back when McKenna's angled shot squirmed under home keeper Gabor Babos.

However, the linesman flagged for offside against Hartley, who did not seem to be interfering with play.

A simple long ball almost caught Hearts out before the half-time break but Castelen's saw shot from distance drifted narrowly wide after Gordon had charged out of his goal.

Hearts began the second half in combative mood and Ruud Gullit's side did not enjoy the space and time they had in the opening 45 minutes.

But the home side fashioned an opening in the 58th minute and Goor raced through the centre of the Hearts defence to chip the ball over the advancing Gordon and double the Dutch team's lead.

Hearts did have chances but Joe Hamill's shot from 20 yards was comfortably saved and McKenna wastefully headed across goal from a promising position.

Kalou and Goor combined well inside the Hearts' penalty box but a good tackle from Alan Maybury denied the Belgian midfielder another goal.

Gordon then made a wonderful fingertip save to deny Kuyt before Hamill blasted a good chance for Hearts wide.

The impressive Kuyt capped a fine individual display with a clever close range finish, when he latched on to Goor's 83rd minute cross.
