Owen strike hands Madrid victory
Michael Owen is congratulated by strike partner Ronaldo
Michael Owen scored his first goal for Real Madrid in a 1-0 home victory over Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League.

Owen toe-poked home Ronaldo's cross in the 35th minute ensuring Real joined Kiev and Bayer Leverkusen on six points from three games.

"It's been a fantastic night. Going away with England probably helped me do that," said Owen.

"Being back with my mates has given me a lot of confidence. I've come back with a fresh spring in my step."

Real Madrid coach Mariano Garcia paid tribute to Owen after the game.

"What I wanted was mobility up front and he responded very well indeed. He's improving all the time and has a great attitude.

In the other Group B game Bayer Leverkusen came from behind with three second-half goals to beat Roma 3-1, who ended the game with nine men.

Roma took the lead through a Dimitar Berbatov own goal after 26 minutes.

But goals from Roque Junior (48), Jacek Krzynowek (59) and Franca (90+4) gave Leverkusen all three points.

Roma's poor disciplinary record in Europe this season also reared its head again when Christian Panucci was sent off after 61 minutes, and Daniele de Rossi was red carded three minutes from time.

In Group C a 76th minute goal from European Footballer of the Year Pavel Nedved gave Juventus a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich.

Nedved's fired past Bayern keeper Oliver Kahn after Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahmovic headed a long ball from Lilian Thuram into Czech's path.

The win gave Juve a maximum nine points from three games and moves them close to qualification, while Bayern have six points.

Ajax moved into third place in the Group C table with three points after a comfortable 3-0 victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Wesley Sonck opened the scoring for the Dutch champions on four minutes as he pounced on the reboudn after goalkeeper Liran Strauber had blocked a Wesley Sneijder shot.

Headers from Nigel de Jong (21st) and Rafael van der Vaart (33rd) sealed Ajax's win.

Two minutes from time Sneijder hit the bar from the penalty spot after a handball by defender Marcio Giovanni.

Some of the win's gloss was taken afterwards when Louis van Gaal resigned as Ajax's technical director.

Van Gaal had been at odds with coach Ronald Koeman over their conflicting expectations of the young Ajax team.

Van Gaal had offered his resignation on Saturday and it was accepted by the club's directors after the Maccabi win.

In Group A last season's finalists Monaco took a big step towards the knockout stages with a 2-1 victory over Olympiakos.

Monaco were quickly out of the blocks, with Argentine striker Javier Saviola and Uruguay's Ernesto Chevanton scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes.

But Olympiakos kept plugging away and Cyprus forward Yiannis Okkas reduced the deficit on the hour from close range.

Monaco lead the group with six points from three games after Liverpool were held to a goalless draw by Deportivo Coruna at Anfield.

Both Liverpool and Olimpiakos are on four points.

Lyon pulled off an important away victory against Fenerbahce with three second-half goals to take control of Group D.

Juninho Pernambucano put the French side ahead after 55 minutes when he fired in a shot from the edge of the area which rebounded off the crossbar and into the net.

Brazilian defender Cris extended Lyon's lead from a corner on 66 minutes when he sent a header past Turkish international goalkeeper Rustu Recber.

Fenerbahce pulled a goal back when Marcio Nobre turned in a cross from Tuncay Sanli.

But Lyon sealed the win in the dying minutes when substitute Pierre-Alain Frau guided the ball past Rustu.

Lyon top the group with seven points, two points clear of Manchester United who drew 0-0 at Sparta Prague.
