Hamburg fired coach Klaus Toppmoeller on Sunday after the club slumped to bottom in the Bundesliga.
Toppmoeller has been unable to turn Hamburg's fortunes around
Toppmoeller was fired hours after Hamburg lost 2-0 at home to newly promoted Arminia Bielefeld, their sixth defeat in eight games.
The coach was in charge for just 33 games at Hamburg, who last won the German championship 21 years ago.
Thomas Doll, who was in charge of the club's minor-league team, will take over as head coach.
"It wasn't an easy decision and we spoke at length to the coach," board chairman Bernd Hoffmann said of Toppmoeller.
"But we couldn't ignore the results and our place in the standings."
