Smith was on target twice for Man Utd

Alan Smith was Manchester United's inspiration as they cruised into the Champions League group stage.

Sir Alex Ferguson may have a £20m bid for Everton's Wayne Rooney on the table, but Smith shows no signs of stepping aside in attack.

He put United ahead from close range after 47 minutes and struck another fine finish three minutes later.

Substitute David Bellion took advantage of slack defending to seal a multi-million cash jackpot for United.

United suffered a blow before kick-off when it was revealed captain Roy Keane was ruled out for several weeks with cracked ribs.

But it appeared to make little difference as they took charge, inspired by the swashbuckling figure of Smith.

He almost gave United the lead in spectacular style six minutes before the interval when his acrobatic header crashed against the bar.

Smith was not to be denied and he deservedly gave United the advantage after 47 minutes.

There was a stroke of good fortune about the goal, but Smith's endeavour was worthy of the reward.

Kleberson's free-kick spun off Adrian Iordache and into the path of Smith only two yards out.

He finished well, but it needed the intervention of referee Markus Merk to confirm the goal after an assistant raised a flag.

But there was nothing fortunate when he struck again three minutes later, sweeping a Gary Neville cross high into the top corner from 10 yards.

Bellion came on for Smith, and marked his appearance with a second successive strike at Old Trafford.

He added the third in the 69th minute when he took advantage of a mistake by Iordache to fire a shot into the corner.

Ferguson's young side, fielding Chris Eagles and Jonathan Spector, had done their manager proud.
