Milan win Super Cup
Andrei Shevchenko
Shevchenko bagged another crucial strike

AC Milan 1-0 FC Porto

Andriy Shevchenko scored the only goal of the game to secure AC Milan the European Super Cup to add to their Champions League trophy.

The Ukrainian striker headed home in the tenth minute against Uefa Cup winners Porto in Monaco's Stade Louis II to cap a wonderful individual display.

Rui Costa had the first attempt on goal in the third minute after a poor clearance fell to him 20 yards out but he snatched at his shot and dragged it wide.

Filippo Inzaghi was the next to be wasteful but he fluffed his shot after some more poor defending.

It was left to Shevchenko to show the way with a top-class header to give Milan the lead.

Rui Costa took much of the credit with a penetrating run and cross but the Ukrainian still had to climb above Paulo Ferreira before giving Victor Baia no chance.

Porto had difficulty coming to terms with the dry and bouncy pitch - and Deco's 20th minute free-kick was their best offering of the first half.

Clarence Seedorf tried a first-time shot from Shevchenko but could not find the target, then an excellent run by the Ukrainian led to Rui Costa putting through Inzaghi but he could only hit the side-netting.

Inzaghi miss

The game was far more open in the second period and - after Maniche had shaved a Milan post - the Italians should have extended their lead.

Shevchenko once again was behind the move, toying with Ricardo Costa before delivering a cross to the far post where Inzaghi headed over.

McCarthy departed after a dreadful hour on the pitch but his replacement Edgaras Jankauskas did not fare much better.

A penalty box scrambled saw the ball pop up to him eight yards out, he took a wild swipe and struck thin air.

Rui Costa flashed a shot over from 10 yards, then Baia saved superbly when confronted by Inzaghi in a one-on-one.

Jankauskas blazed wide then Dida pulled off a good save - his only proper one of the match - to deny Jose Bosingwa and condemn Porto to defeat.
