Man Utd duo on Uefa shortlist
Ruud Van Nistelrooy appeals for a goal during the Champions League semi-final second leg away to Bayer Leverkusen in April
Van Nistelrooy led United's European campaign
Ruud van Nistelrooy, of Manchester United, Real Madrid's Raul Gonzalez and team-mate Zinedine Zidane are the shortlisted candidates for Uefa's Most Valuable Player award.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and Vicente del Bosque, of Real Madrid, face competition from Bayer Leverkusen's Klaus Toppmoller for the Best Coach award.

The presentation ceremony will take place in Monaco on 29 August.

There are further accolades for the best player in Europe in each position.

All are based on players' and managers' performances in last season's Uefa club competitions, which explains why Double-winning Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is not in contention.

Gonzalez guided Real to victory in last season's Champions League, beating Leverkusen 2-1 in the final in Glasgow in May.

United fell to the Germans in the semi-finals.
