Maldini steps down
Paolo Maldini
Maldini has a record 126 Italian caps
Italy captain Paolo Maldini has confirmed his retirement from international football.

Maldini had said he would retire after the 2002 World Cup but Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni wanted him to continue to give him time to find a replacement.

Trapattoni wanted Maldini to see through part of the Euro 2004 qualifiers, but he has failed to convince his captain.

I don't think I will be on the field against Slovenia
Paolo Maldini

"I have thought a lot about the national side and my decision has not changed," Maldini told the Italian press.

"Trapattoni and my team mates from the World Cup squad have tried to change my mind but the fundamental thing is that someone who is 34 years of age cannot think about playing in the European championship in 2004."

Maldini made his international debut in 1988 and most of his 126 caps - a record - have come at left-back.

Italy have a friendly arranged against Slovenia on 21 August before their European championship qualification campaign starts against Azerbaijan on 7 September.

Maldini ruled out a farewell game against Slovenia and Alessandro Nesta is likely to take over his captaincy of the national side.
