Santini seeks France job
Santini played for St Etienne in their 1970s heyday
Jacques Santini, one of the favourites to succeed Roger Lemerre as France coach, has revealed he is interested in taking the job.
But French Football Federation (FFF) president Claude Simonet insisted on Saturday that there are still "three or four names" in contention for the post. Santini, who led Olympique Lyonnais to their first French championship last season, said he was able to put himself forward after Lemerre was sacked on Friday.
"I don't have anything to say on Roger Lemerre's departure, but now it's official and now that my name is frequently being mentioned as a possible replacement I have to say that I am interested in it," Santini said on Saturday.
Lemerre was fired by the FFF after the 1998 World Cup winners crashed out of this year's finals in the first round. And Simonet said that he hoped to be able to name his replacement within a fortnight. Santini has just reverted to the technical director's role at Lyon after spending two years as coach in a spell that culminated in last season's championship triumph. He said: "I am still employed by Lyon and remain at the disposal of my club. "If my name is to be put forward the situation will have to be discussed with (club president) Jean-Michel Aulas."
Other names in the frame are former France midfielder Alain Giresse, French Under-21 coach Raymond Domenech and ex-Japan boss Philippe Troussier. While FFF vice-president Platini favours Santini, Simonet's choice is Jean-Francois Domergue, a former Paris St Germain manager who guided Le Havre to promotion last term. Monaco manager Didier Deschamps and Fulham boss Jean Tigana are outside bets to take charge. Simonet said: "I have three or four names in mind and I hope I'll be able to solve the problem between July 14 and July 20."
The 50-year-old Santini was part of the all-conquering St Etienne side which captured four championship titles between 1969 and 1981. He ended his playing days at Montpellier in 1983 and then started out in management with third division Lisieux. Santini became technical director at Lyon in 1997 before taking over as coach three years later. Now he is back in the technical director's role, Paul Le Guen will coach the defending champions when the new season begins. |
